{"id":1245,"date":"2016-01-06T03:38:58","date_gmt":"2016-01-06T03:38:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/?p=1245"},"modified":"2016-01-07T15:54:31","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T15:54:31","slug":"clean-plate-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2016\/01\/clean-plate-syndrome\/","title":{"rendered":"Do you have &#8220;Clean Plate Syndrome&#8221;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"Plate\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1292\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1292\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Do-you-have.jpg\" alt=\"Eating issues and feeding challenges\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Do-you-have.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Do-you-have-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Do-you-have-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Do-you-have-610x458.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I spend most of my time here talking about our little ones and the feeding challenges THEY have.\u00a0 Well, truth be told, I have my own issues at the table!<\/p>\n<p>Over the years I&#8217;ve noticed (and others have pointed out) that\u00a0I rarely, if ever, have any food scrapings\u00a0left on my plate after a meal.\u00a0 I have a hard\u00a0time putting my fork down,\u00a0despite my belly\u00a0being full.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;ve also been known to help friends and family finish off their unfinished meal.<\/p>\n<p>I have a condition called <em>Clean Plate Syndrome<\/em> (or CPS).\u00a0\u00a0 Note: Physicians and the like would not be familiar with this term, because I just made it up. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Clean plate syndrome<\/strong>:\u00a0 one feels the need to consume all food on their plate, regardless of whether he\/she is fully satiated at a meal.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I was not born with CPS but I do remember distinctly when this behavior started.<\/p>\n<h3>As a child, I was always encouraged to eat everything on my plate.<\/h3>\n<p>As you might relate, I was often reminded that there were children starving in the world, so it would be rude to leave part of my meal untouched.\u00a0\u00a0 At the time, I was too young to point out that this logic was flawed; malnourished children would <em>not\u00a0<\/em>be better or worse off based on\u00a0how much I ate.<\/p>\n<p>I did as told and\u00a0ate every last crump.\u00a0 Instead of listening to my body and responding accordingly,\u00a0I often\u00a0left the table feeling more uncomfortable than necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-ish years later, I still struggle with\u00a0portion sizes and knowing when to\u00a0stop.<\/p>\n<h3>Why am I telling you this?<\/h3>\n<p>My desire to eat everything in sight likely goes back to the constant nudges to clean my plate as a child.\u00a0\u00a0 The research also\u00a0suggests that one&#8217;s feeding environment in the early years can strongly influence their feeding behavior, food preferences AND weight\u00a0in later years.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If we are pressured to eat brussel sprouts as a kid, chances are we will continue to grimace at them as an adult.\u00a0\u00a0 If children are only given the foods parents <em>think<\/em> they will eat, then they will be less inclined\u00a0to try new foods as an adult.<\/p>\n<p>And get this, UNDERWEIGHT children are more likely to be OVERWEIGHT as adults (because they are encouraged to eat more than their body needs).\u00a0\u00a0 This one\u00a0hit home with me as\u00a0a mother to a little girl who is underweight (due to\u00a0a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2015\/07\/russell-silver-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\"> genetic condition that limits her growth potential)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m\u00a0super passionate about\u00a0working with picky eaters, problem feeders,\u00a0and their parents for 2 main reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I know how emotionally draining it is to\u00a0watch our little ones\u00a0pick over their food and worry about their nutrition.<\/li>\n<li>I know that how we feed our little ones today can dictate their future relationship with food.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div>\n<p>I also\u00a0know that putting an end to picky eating can be done.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There are really <strong>simple solutions<\/strong> that are <strong>proven<\/strong> to work with most children, even some of the pickiest.\u00a0\u00a0 The key is to address it early using strategies that will be beneficial in the long run (and avoid common strategies that will exacerbate the pickiness).<\/p>\n<p>I cover all of this and so much more in\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/pickyeater\/\" target=\"_blank\">Picky Eater Protocol<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1283\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/PEP-Facebook-ad4.png\" alt=\"Picky eating - online program\" width=\"829\" height=\"434\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re ready to <strong>start enjoying mealtimes<\/strong> and <strong>stop worrying<\/strong> about how much and what your little one is eating, this program might be just what you and your family\u00a0need. \ud83d\ude42\u00a0\u00a0 Click on the image above to learn more!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you have the urge to eat every last bite on your plate?
