font-family: Calibri;\">P<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">arenting a child who is picky at the table can be frustrating.\u00a0 It&#8217;s no surprise that we\u00a0overthink and overcomplicate meals in an\u00a0effort to fix\u00a0 their &#8220;picky eating&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We spend extra time preparing a different meal for the kiddos or\u00a0pureeing green\u00a0veggies into muffins.\u00a0\u00a0Exhausting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Does it really require that much work?\u00a0 Nope!\u00a0 At least not for the average picky eater.\u00a0\u00a0 The solutions can actually be REALLY\u00a0simple.\u00a0\u00a0 For the most part, there aren&#8217;t any &#8216;special&#8217; tricks you need to implement with your little one.\u00a0\u00a0 Just the same ol&#8217; strategies you would use with the child who isn&#8217;t fussy. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff6600; font-family: Calibri;\">Last night I practiced what I preach.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Rice\u00a0Paper Wraps were on the menu, which is\u00a0one of\u00a0my favourite\u00a0go-to meals.\u00a0 One of the meals I resort to when I want to use up odds and ends in my fridge.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">I could tell Sienna was getting bored and needed some entertainment\u00a0(sorry, why do we have so many toys ??) so I asked her to join me in the filling and rolling of the wraps.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Side note:\u00a0 we invested in this contraption called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lucaandcompany.com\/products\/the-funpod\/\" target=\"_blank\">FunPod <\/a>last year for this very reason &#8211;\u00a0to get my girls involved in the cooking process when they were older.\u00a0 Up to this point it&#8217;s been used for handwashing but now that Sienna is older, we are finally reaping the benefits.\u00a0 The FunPod is essentially a wooden box with an adjustable platform inside for kids to stand on.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a look at it:.\u00a0 P.S.\u00a0 No idea why she needed to wear a backpack that&#8217;s bigger than her\u00a0for this process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Sienna has never been interested in trying the Rice Paper Wraps, but there&#8217;s a first time for everything!\u00a0\u00a0 After stuffing and wrapping, she picked which rolls were hers and promptly ran to her seat at the table.\u00a0\u00a0Once we situated ourselves, she didn&#8217;t hesitate a second before going in for a bite.\u00a0\u00a0 Her first bite.\u00a0 Then another and another.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t a clean process by any means because she insisted on eating from both ends of the rolls,\u00a0so they naturally fell apart.\u00a0 In the end, she had eaten one roll without much help\u00a0from me.\u00a0\u00a0 Heck, I was too preoccupied trying to pretend I wasn&#8217;t impressed by her new found love for rice wraps.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1329\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Rice-paper-rolls-with-Sienna-5.jpg\" alt=\"Rice paper rolls with Sienna (5)\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Rice-paper-rolls-with-Sienna-5.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Rice-paper-rolls-with-Sienna-5-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Rice-paper-rolls-with-Sienna-5-300x400.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff6600; font-family: Calibri;\">Lessons Learned:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><strong>#1<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>Don&#8217;t assume your kids won&#8217;t eat X.\u00a0<\/strong> They\u00a0don&#8217;t like it because they&#8217;ve never or rarely tried it.\u00a0\u00a0If parents don&#8217;t\u00a0present\u00a0X because we think our kids won&#8217;t try it, then they\u00a0won&#8217;t have an opportunity to\u00a0try it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><strong>#2<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>Get them involved in the meal prep.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Pick a meal that your little one wouldn&#8217;t typically eat and let them help with\u00a0making the meal.\u00a0 Stirring a chili, peeling a hard boiled egg, throwing veggies into a stirfry, pouring pancake batter into a pan, whatever is safe and gives them a sense of control.\u00a0 Once they see what goes into it and watch it transform into a &#8220;meal&#8221;, there&#8217;s greater interest in trying it. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<strong>#3 &#8211; Make Rice Paper Wraps!\u00a0<\/strong> They are sooo easy, tasty, and fun too.\u00a0 Recipe below.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">These are SO MANY other simple &amp; effective &#8220;picky eating&#8221; strategies parents don&#8217;t realize their meals are missing.\u00a0 There are also many mistakes that worried parents make out of desperation\u00a0to get our kids eat.\u00a0 It seems, the harder we try the worse &#8220;picky eating&#8221; font-family: Calibri;\">Thinly slice vegetables of choice (we used red and yellow peppers, mango, avocado, cucumber, and pesto sauce).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Add shredded chicken, hemp seeds, salmon, shrimp or any other protein if serving as a meal. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Boil water and pour into a large bowl (big enough to hold rice paper).\u00a0 Keep this away from the kids for obvious reasons. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Dip rice paper in warm water until it starts to soften (not too soft or it will fall apart).\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Put rice paper on clean plate <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">This is where the kids come in &#8211; Fill the middle of the paper with veggies and protein of choice.
