Or is it your child&#8217;s blood sugar?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1362\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Crying-child.jpg\" alt=\"Crying child\" width=\"655\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Crying-child.jpg 655w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Crying-child-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Crying-child-610x440.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Temper tantrums.\u00a0 I could\u00a0live without them!<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately they\u00a0come with the terrible twos (threes and fours it seems too).\u00a0\u00a0 They are often just your little one&#8217;s way of communicating, albeit poorly,\u00a0that they are dissatisfied with something.<\/p>\n<p>While temper tantrums ARE part of\u00a0a development phase, they ARE ALSO a sign of something less obvious.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>Could your child\u00a0be\u00a0HUNGRY?<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>Or should I say HANGRY (and have low blood sugar).<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For a moment, think about what you&#8217;re like when you haven&#8217;t had something to eat for a while and start to get agitated, light headed, etc.\u00a0\u00a0 If you were two\u00a0years old and lacked emotional control, you would likely be throwing toys around the room too.<\/p>\n<p>The next time you see a temper looming, speak to your little one calmly to understand\u00a0what is pushing him\/her over the edge. \u00a0My husband often says in an over-exaggerated calm voice, &#8220;<em>Sienna honey, are you crying because we won&#8217;t let you watch Caillou all day?&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0She will nod her head in agreement as we explain that we understand her frustration.<\/p>\n<p>Usually that diffuses the situation nicely.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u00a0there are other times when she&#8217;s maddened because I gave her a yellow spoon vs. a blue spoon&#8230;.or something ridiculous and I know she needs to eat.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth mentioning that my daughter is also more likely to go into\u00a0hypoglycemic episodes\u00a0(common\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2015\/07\/russell-silver-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\">her Russell Silver Syndrome genetic diagnosis<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0 So she MUST eat sufficient amounts every 2-3 hours or we will have a temper tantrum on our hands.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Hypoglycemia<\/span>:<\/b>\u00a0 also known as <b>low blood sugar<\/b> or <b>low blood glucose<\/b>, is when blood sugar decreases to below normal levels. \u00a0This may result in a variety of\u00a0 symptoms\u00a0including clumsiness, trouble talking, confusion, frustration or\u00a0a feeling of hunger, sweating, shakiness, and weakness may also be present.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">How to keep your child&#8217;s\u00a0blood sugar stable:<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide <strong>frequent\u00a0eating opportunities<\/strong> (don&#8217;t let your little one go more than 2-3 hours without food)<\/li>\n<li>Avoid giving carbohydrates alone as they tend to spike blood sugar and cause a rapid decline (resulting in &#8220;hanger&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>Offer food\u00a0that contains\u00a0<strong>fat<\/strong> or <strong>protein<\/strong> with <strong>carbohydrates.\u00a0 <\/strong>Fats and proteins help keep blood sugar levels stable so we don&#8217;t see the spikes (children bouncing off walls) and crashes (temper tantrums, tiredness, etc).<\/li>\n<li>Keep snacks in your diaper bag, purse, car, etc. for emergencies.\u00a0 I ALWAYS have a bag of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegoodbean.com\/snacks\/\" target=\"_blank\">Good Bean chickpeas <\/a>and a few\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.larabar.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lara bars <\/a>(a good mix of protein and carbs) stashed on the driver&#8217;s side door for those &#8220;just in case&#8221; moments.\u00a0\u00a0 Or I simply have fruit and nuts on hand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With sufficient nutrients offered at regular intervals you will notice attention and overall energy is improved.\u00a0 Not to mention a few less broken toys and tears.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Photo by:<\/strong> Jill Greenberg<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Temper tantrums.
