{"id":1369,"date":"2016-01-28T08:00:40","date_gmt":"2016-01-28T08:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/?p=1369"},"modified":"2016-08-29T20:18:25","modified_gmt":"2016-08-29T20:18:25","slug":"mealtimes-mistake-1-with-picky-eaters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2016\/01\/mealtimes-mistake-1-with-picky-eaters\/","title":{"rendered":"How to start EVERY meal with kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As you may have noticed, children function much better with routines and consistency.\u00a0\u00a0 In the book &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Helping-Child-Extreme-Picky-Eating\/dp\/162625110X\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Helping your child with Extreme Picky Eating<\/em><\/a>&#8221; they put it perfectly.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>C<i>hildren understand what is expected of them when they know what to expect&#8221; <\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hence the importance of regular schedules.\u00a0 Kids do not like being surprised, unless perhaps it&#8217;s their birthday and involves opening\u00a0presents.<\/p>\n<p>Just as you have a bedtime routine that starts with a bath, followed by a\u00a0book, and ends with singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,\u00a0every meal should have certain elements repeated with diligence &#8211; essentially a beginning, middle, and end.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Beginning<\/strong> (the routine before the meal actually starts)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Middle<\/strong> (what happens when you&#8217;re at the table and\u00a0having a\u00a0meal)<\/li>\n<li><strong>End<\/strong> (the routine to follow as a meal is ending)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These steps are covered in detail in the 6 week online program &#8211;\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/pickyeater\/\" target=\"_blank\">Picky Eater Protocol<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0but I do want to hone in\u00a0on something here.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically,\u00a0on\u00a0one aspect of <strong>what the <u>beginning<\/u> of a meal should look like.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you can get the first part down then you&#8217;re setting yourself up for a more enjoyable battle-free meal.\u00a0 This\u00a0routine is also a sanity saver for parents because you can run on auto-drive at every meal knowing what comes next (and you don&#8217;t have to overthink your steps, as many parents do\u00a0with picky eaters).<\/p>\n<p>Taking our little one away from their toys, the TV, or any other activity\u00a0with no forewarning, is\u00a0asking for trouble &#8211; and starting\u00a0your meal off on the wrong foot.\u00a0\u00a0 Hollering &#8220;it&#8217;s time to eat&#8221; without a heads up prior will likely result in some kicking and screaming.\u00a0\u00a0 They get their back\u00a0up before the meal even starts, and with the adrenaline flowing their appetite will take a hit.<\/p>\n<p>So, what we do prior to a meal or snack can\u00a0set the stage for the meal&#8230;and result in\u00a0eating LESS.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">The Solution: 5 Minute Warning<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is one of the easiest strategies to implement and can make a difference in your child&#8217;s behavior at meals or snacks.<\/p>\n<p>Just as you would give your child a heads up before it&#8217;s time to leave the park, you should do the same for mealtime letting him or her\u00a0know that it&#8217;s almost time to eat.\u00a0\u00a0 They can mentally prepare themselves with no surprises.\u00a0\u00a0 So before dinner is ready tonight, why not say this:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<i>We\u2019re going to put away the toys &amp; have dinner in 5 minutes OK [insert your little one&#8217;s name here]<\/i>?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having had an &#8220;extremely picky eater&#8221; myself, I realize a 5 minute warning will not\u00a0solve your mealtime troubles.\u00a0\u00a0It is just one baby step in the right direction. \u00a0 But\u00a0when we\u00a0put all those baby steps together,\u00a0we\u00a0see incredible changes.<\/p>\n<p>Give the &#8220;5 minute warning&#8221;\u00a0a shot and\u00a0let me know how things go in the comments below. \u00a0More to come!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kids do not like being surprised and thrive with schedules.
