{"id":1520,"date":"2016-05-11T07:00:16","date_gmt":"2016-05-11T07:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/?p=1520"},"modified":"2017-10-12T15:34:35","modified_gmt":"2017-10-12T19:34:35","slug":"why-kids-love-carbs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2016\/05\/why-kids-love-carbs\/","title":{"rendered":"Why kids LOVE carbs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">It&#8217;s no secret.\u00a0Kids LOVE carbs.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Many of the\u00a0children\u00a0I meet and\u00a0work with (especially the &#8216;picky&#8217; ones) are guaranteed to have at least one of the following foods on their list of favourites:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bread<\/li>\n<li>Cookies<\/li>\n<li>Crackers<\/li>\n<li>Chips<\/li>\n<li>Pancakes<\/li>\n<li>Waffles<\/li>\n<li>Pizza<\/li>\n<li>Pasta<\/li>\n<li>[insert other carbohydrate food here]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I want to share why, but before\u00a0I start throwing the word &#8220;carbohydrate&#8221; around in this post, I should say this&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Not all carbs are created equal.<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Vegetables and fruits are carbohydrates<\/strong> <strong>as well,<\/strong> which many kids do love. \u00a0However, the carbs we are really talking about here are the refined and over-processed ones that spike blood sugar quickly, lack fiber and other nutrients found in whole foods. \u00a0The carbs\u00a0that are often favourites for<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/pickyeater\/\"> picky eaters<\/a> and as a result, a concern for their parents.<\/p>\n<p>You might be frustrated because your little one always seems to gravitate to these nutrient-lacking refined carbohydrate or high sugar foods (including candy). \u00a0But there may a reason to their madness.<\/p>\n<p>Three reasons to be exact. \u00a0I&#8217;ll get there in a sec&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>First, let me demonstrate!<\/p>\n<p>Assume we offer a child two options:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pancakes&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1773 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Blueberry_pancakes.jpg\" alt=\"Blueberry_pancakes\" width=\"616\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Blueberry_pancakes.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Blueberry_pancakes-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Blueberry_pancakes-768x516.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Blueberry_pancakes-610x410.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Or broccoli<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1774 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/two-heads-of-broccoli.jpg\" alt=\"Picky eaters\" width=\"563\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/two-heads-of-broccoli.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/two-heads-of-broccoli-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/two-heads-of-broccoli-610x406.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some kids will happily choose broccoli (including my Naomi &#8211; for now!), but most little ones would opt\u00a0for a bite of those\u00a0pancakes.<\/p>\n<p>If the choice\u00a0was parsnips\u00a0vs. pasta. \u00a0Or cauliflower vs. crackers. \u00a0The latter option would likely win out as well.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Kids prefer carbohydrate foods for 3\u00a0reasons:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>To gain\u00a0energy.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Looking at our example, eating one ounce of pancake offers 67\u00a0calories versus only 13\u00a0calories in the same amount of broccoli. \u00a0 \u00a0So ounce for ounce, they get a <strong>more concentrated energy<\/strong> with carby and bready foods like waffles, pasta and pancakes. \u00a0 \u00a0To get the same amount of calories, it would require our little guy or gal to eat almost 5x the amount of broccoli. \u00a0So when given the choice, they choose the pancake which means less time eating and more time playing.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>To save\u00a0energy.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Most refined carbohydrate foods are simple to eat. \u00a0Pancakes for instance\u00a0are soft making them <strong>easy to chew and breakdown<\/strong> quickly\u00a0unlike a piece of\u00a0broccoli. \u00a0 Again, efficiency plays a role in their decision. \u00a0They can get what they need much faster by eating the high carbohydrate\/calorie foods.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>To enjoy.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>And now let&#8217;s state the obvious. \u00a0Kids (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and<\/span> the average adult) would rather have pancakes, cookies, chips, crackers, or something sweet over beautiful\u00a0green bowl of broccoli because it just <strong>tastes better.<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0Especially when our taste buds are accustomed to sweeter foods, it becomes much harder to turn them down over broccoli or other vegetables (which are pretty tasty as well).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>How to help\u00a0your child\u00a0try other new foods?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/webinar\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3289\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Copy-of-FREE-WEBINAR-FB-Ads-1.png\" alt=\"Picky Eating solutions\" width=\"676\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Copy-of-FREE-WEBINAR-FB-Ads-1.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Copy-of-FREE-WEBINAR-FB-Ads-1-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Copy-of-FREE-WEBINAR-FB-Ads-1-768x402.png 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Copy-of-FREE-WEBINAR-FB-Ads-1-1024x536.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Copy-of-FREE-WEBINAR-FB-Ads-1-610x319.png 610w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Copy-of-FREE-WEBINAR-FB-Ads-1-1080x565.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While our kids seem\u00a0happy to sustain themselves on pancakes and pasta every day NOW, they will not be pancake obsessed forever.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s if we continue to present a balance\u00a0of healthy foods (and periodically &#8216;unhealthier&#8217; ones too). \u00a0Remember when I told you<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2015\/10\/why-i-give-my-child-dessert-for-dinner\/\"> why I give my child\u00a0desserts for dinner<\/a>? \u00a0Well, the same logic applies here.\u00a0 Include these foods at meals once in a while so that they don&#8217;t become &#8220;forbidden&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Also, our kids will choose the path of least resistance when offered to them. \u00a0So, it&#8217;s our job to keep providing a <strong>variety <\/strong>of foods &#8211; making sure to include nutrient-dense foods like these:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bean-based pastas (like <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2yj9qj4\">Chickapea pasta<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Protein-packed pancakes (made with 2 eggs, 1 banana, and nut\/seed butter)<\/li>\n<li>Seed-based crackers (like <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2z2cz3C\">Mary&#8217;s Crackers <\/a>or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sondibruner.com\/2013\/01\/04\/pumpkin-seed-zucchini-crackers\/\">make your own<\/a> crackers)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, there are many others which I&#8217;ll save for another post.
