&#8211; be it vitamins and minerals for nutrition, or calories for energy\u00a0and growth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/webinar\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2259 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/5.png\" alt=\"free picky eating webinar\" width=\"784\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/5.png 784w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/5-300x113.png 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/5-768x289.png 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/5-610x230.png 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 784px) 100vw, 784px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no shortage of\u00a0reasons\u00a0to think about\u00a0<strong>WHAT<\/strong>\u00a0foods go on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, if we\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/webinar\">want our little ones to try new foods<\/a>,\u00a0the <strong>HOW\u00a0<\/strong>is<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>just as important as the <strong>WHAT.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How<\/strong> food is prepared (steamed, roasted, boiled, in sauce, no sauce, pureed, etc)<\/li>\n<li><strong>How<\/strong> food is presented (chopped, strips, cubes, on toothpicks, balls, happy faces, etc)<\/li>\n<li><strong>How<\/strong> much food we offer (portion sizes)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For today, let&#8217;s\u00a0dive into the latter &#8211; and you can start using right away.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/webinar\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2259 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/5.png\" alt=\"free picky eating webinar\" width=\"784\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/5.png 784w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/5-300x113.png 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/5-768x289.png 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/5-610x230.png 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 784px) 100vw, 784px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The unknowns can be pretty scary for some kiddos.\u00a0 So we want to go slow and steady, and start small.\u00a0 <strong>Really\u00a0small<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Let me explain.<\/p>\n<p>I remember one of the first\u00a0times\u00a0I\u00a0offered my daughter chickpeas.\u00a0 Sienna wasn&#8217;t a meat eater at that time (she found it hard to chew due to oral motor\u00a0deficits) so\u00a0I was always experimenting with alternate protein sources.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0threw a handful of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegoodbean.com\">The Good Bean<\/a> roasted chickpeas on her plate with the expectation that she would\u00a0try a few.\u00a0 But\u00a0I should have\u00a0know, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2015\/08\/what-you-can-expect-from-your-little-ones\/\">expectations are dangerous<\/a>\u00a0with little ones. \u00a0And you can probably guess what\u00a0happened &#8211; she didn&#8217;t try one measly chickpea.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1675\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chickpea-bowl.jpg\" alt=\"Chickpea bowl\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chickpea-bowl.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chickpea-bowl-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chickpea-bowl-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chickpea-bowl-610x610.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From her perspective, she saw this pile of foreign food and probably\u00a0felt overwhelmed thinking <em>&#8220;Ahhh, I have to eat ALL of this stuff I&#8217;ve never seen before?!&#8221;.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Well, hindsight is 20\/20 right?\u00a0 While doing my research on children&#8217;s eating, I experimented with a different approach and\u00a0change how I offered (and other new foods) &#8211; specifically how much I offered.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of putting a small pile on her plate, I placed one teeny tiny lonesome chickpea in the bowl in front of her.\u00a0 And what do you know, she picked it up with her tiny fingers, put it on her lips, then into her mouth and CRUNCH.\u00a0 And\u00a0one roasted\u00a0chickpea turned into nine&#8230;who&#8217;s counting? \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1674\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chickpea-bowl-one.jpg\" alt=\"Blue Bowl of roasted chickpeas\" width=\"605\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chickpea-bowl-one.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chickpea-bowl-one-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chickpea-bowl-one-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chickpea-bowl-one-610x610.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Putting myself in her shoes, that lonely chickpea seemed much less daunting than a bowl full of the &#8216;stuff&#8217;.\u00a0 It was also small enough that it felt &#8220;safe&#8221; enough to put in her mouth and chew.\u00a0 And because it&#8217;s just one piece, she\u00a0didn&#8217;t feel the pressure\u00a0to eat more.<\/p>\n<p>The next photo makes me a hypocrite.\u00a0 I put out the bowls for photos and of course, Sienna went for the pile of chickpeas.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1676\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chickpea-bowls-hand.jpg\" alt=\"Picky eaters try new foods\" width=\"602\" height=\"602\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chickpea-bowls-hand.jpg 639w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chickpea-bowls-hand-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chickpea-bowls-hand-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Chickpea-bowls-hand-610x610.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>At the next mealtime with your picky eater, try this:<\/h3>\n<p>Bring new foods to the table while\u00a0thinking about the what AND how.\u00a0 That is the quality (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/ebook\">aim for nutrient-dense foods where you can<\/a>)\u00a0AND quantity (make the portion\u00a0size\u00a0reasonable). \u00a0As they say, less is more!\u00a0 Especially with picky eaters.<\/p>\n<p>Next week we&#8217;ll talk about another &#8220;How&#8221;
