But the recipe is a keeper!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I must <em>really<\/em> love my husband, because he&#8217;s finally convinced me to take our two girls camping (when they were both under 3.5 years old).\u00a0 \u00a0I really do love camping &#8211; being one with nature, technology-free, and cooking over a campfire.<\/p>\n<p>The outdoors is part of my DNA.\u00a0 I&#8217;m just not sold on the idea of tenting it with young kids (especially one who is in the midst of being potty trained).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nor am I sold on eating &#8220;camp food&#8221; for 3 days. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Unless it includes strawberry chia fruit roll-ups (hint, hint).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If we&#8217;re\u00a0not sleeping much (my girls are acrobatic in their sleep) and required to be &#8220;on&#8221; 24\/7 (making sure no one gets lost\u00a0in the bush), we need fuel from some good-for-me food. \u00a0So do our little ones.<\/p>\n<p>Therein lies my challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Pull up any camping menu and you&#8217;re bound to find a lot of white and brown foods. \u00a0Bread and meat. \u00a0Meat and bread. \u00a0And maybe some cheese too.<\/p>\n<p>Can&#8217;t we have something <em>green, blue, or red\u00a0<\/em>to eat?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2073 aligncenter\" 80\/20 rule\u00a0becomes the 60\/40 rule. \u00a0We will eat nutrient-dense foods 60 percent of the time and nutrient-dense (brown and white) foods\u00a0for the other 40 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Because you&#8217;ve gotta live right?<\/p>\n<p>Just as you\u00a0can&#8217;t have kale chips without\u00a0kombucha&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>You can&#8217;t have\u00a0campfires without marshmallow stuffed smores.<\/p>\n<p>They go hand-in-hand.<\/p>\n<p>So I will relent and relax, and just &#8216;let&#8217;\u00a0my family\u00a0enjoy their 60\/40 weekend. \u00a0I will enjoy it too, yet\u00a0it\u00a0doesn&#8217;t mean I&#8217;m giving up on nutrition altogether \ud83d\ude42 \u00a0 I have a few nutrient-dense camping-friendly recipes up my sleeve. \u00a0The one I am most excited about takes me back to my childhood days of Half Moons and Flakies.<\/p>\n<p>Remember those sweet and chewy Fruit Roll-Ups?<\/p>\n<p>They\u00a0are a great idea in principle, and seemed like a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2016\/07\/healthy-packaged-snacks-kids\/\">healthier treat<\/a>. \u00a0Well, the ingredients suggest otherwise. \u00a0<em>Corn syrup, sugar, hydrogenated cottonseed oil, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/does-artificial-food-coloring-contribute-to-adhd-in-children\/\">artificial colouring<\/a><\/em>&#8230;but why?!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2087 aligncenter\" \u00a0 Why the LONG list of unnecessary ingredients? \u00a0Isn&#8217;t fruit in itself perfectly sweet and satisfying? \u00a0I thought I shouldn&#8217;t judge until I try it, so I put my Excalibur dehydrator to the test and made my first batch of fruit leather &#8211; strawberry chia fruit roll-ups were on the menu!<\/p>\n<p>Of course, I couldn&#8217;t resist tossing in some\u00a0chia seeds. \u00a0Working with picky eaters, I&#8217;m always looking for ways to up the ante and pack in more nutrition per bite. \u00a0I also wanted some fiber, fat and protein to help <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2016\/01\/another-temper-tantrum-or-is-your-child-just-hangry\/\">balance my little one&#8217;s blood sugars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\"
