{"id":2296,"date":"2016-10-12T20:47:37","date_gmt":"2016-10-12T20:47:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/?p=2296"},"modified":"2019-10-23T16:34:56","modified_gmt":"2019-10-23T20:34:56","slug":"healthier-halloween-treats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2016\/10\/healthier-halloween-treats\/","title":{"rendered":"8 Healthier Halloween &#8220;Treats&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Halloween is around the corner and you might be cringing at the thought of your child coming home with a bag\u00a0 that candy!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s rare that my girls get their hands on nutrient-lacking &#8220;treats&#8221; at home, but they aren&#8217;t completely avoidable (or avoided).\u00a0 I explain why we need to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2015\/10\/why-i-give-my-child-dessert-for-dinner\/\">keep desserts in the mix here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, it&#8217;s a given that when we have a visit with family, or attend parties there will be treats.\u00a0 Case in point:\u00a0 Grandparents tend to excel in this department, because&#8230;you know, they don&#8217;t want to deprive their grandkids of the sweet stuff. (wink, wink)<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s one-off occasions during the year where treats are easily\u00a0accessible, like Halloween.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2298 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Halloween.png\" alt=\"Healthy Halloween treats\" width=\"730\" height=\"612\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With Sienna&#8217;s congenital condition (my eldest daughter) we\u00a0<em>should<\/em> limit the sweet stuff as much as possible.\u00a0 That goes for all kids (and humans) but we live in a sugar-laden society and thus, we need to navigate accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>So as Halloween approaches, I feel compelled to put a healthier spin on Halloween.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">Here&#8217;s why I wanted a Healthier Halloween<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Firstly,<\/strong> the excitement around Halloween is high. \u00a0Since sugar-laded treats are historically thrown into the Halloween mix, they become associated with &#8220;fun&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In our family we try <em>not<\/em> to make unhealthy foods (like cookies, ice cream, candy) seem &#8220;special&#8221;, because special foods become more desired foods. \u00a0Brownies deserve no more attention and excitement than broccoli\u00a0does! \u00a0 However, the Halloween fun and sugar-frenzy\u00a0seem to go hand-in-hand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Secondly,<\/strong> who says\u00a0treats have to contain\u00a0nutrient-lacking ingredients to taste good? \u00a0As soon as Halloween season approaches store shelves are packed high with assorted candy and chocolate. \u00a0But there are other options!<\/p>\n<p>I know, I know.<\/p>\n<p>There is a time and place for\u00a0sweets.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t lie.
