{"id":2538,"date":"2019-12-24T11:36:17","date_gmt":"2019-12-24T16:36:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/?p=2538"},"modified":"2019-12-24T11:43:00","modified_gmt":"2019-12-24T16:43:00","slug":"12-holiday-hacks-im-doing-today-healthy-egg-nog-recipe-included","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2019\/12\/12-holiday-hacks-im-doing-today-healthy-egg-nog-recipe-included\/","title":{"rendered":"12 holiday hacks I&#8217;m doing today (Healthy Egg Nog recipe included!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Holy moly, the holidays are HECTIC!<\/p>\n<p>Every year I so badly want to embrace the joy of the holidays.\u00a0 Yet I end up feeling overwhelmed with last minute shopping, and running around like a crazy person (packing to get 3 kids out the door is a job in itself).<\/p>\n<p>The playpen, party clothes, play clothes, snowsuits, toothbrushes, sleep buddies, Sienna&#8217;s medicines&#8230;and then there&#8217;s my own stuff.\u00a0 We&#8217;re living out of a suitcase for a week.\u00a0 If I forget anything we&#8217;re out of luck.<\/p>\n<p>While we&#8217;re not travelling across the country, we do drive an hour to Nonna and Nonno&#8217;s house.\u00a0 And then on Christmas morning we get back in the Honda Odyssey to visit Nana and Papa. Then off to my parents for more celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>In just a few days, we&#8217;re on the road for at least 6 hours (with 3 overtired, overstimulated children).<\/p>\n<p>One day, when our home is large enough to host 30 people for dinner, we can hopefully stay put in Toronto.\u00a0 But for now, it feels like the National Lampoon&#8217;s vacation!<\/p>\n<p>Yet despite all the complaining above, this holiday the insanity hasn&#8217;t been so insane.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been reflecting on why I feel so much more calm and realized there were a few things I&#8217;m doing to keep me sane, happy, and in CONTROL as a mom of three.\u00a0 \u00a0Here are 12 holiday hacks that make the days more enjoyable, and help me feel GREAT in the process.<\/p>\n<h2>In the Mornings:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>I Drink Garlic Lemonade.<\/strong> Everyone is getting sick around us.\u00a0 So far we&#8217;re surprisingly sniffle-free and I want keep it that way!\u00a0 So I guzzle a litre of this immune-boosting tonic when I feel the sneezes or sore throat coming on.\u00a0 And sometimes the kids join me in having our &#8220;superpower tea&#8221;.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kulinarian.com\/recipes\/garlic-lemonade\/\">Here&#8217;s the recipe<\/a> (note: I tend to use less honey).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6311\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_326c-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Garlic lemonade\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_326c-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_326c-980x980.jpg 980w, http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_326c-480x480.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>I Move for 20 Minutes.<\/strong>\u00a0 I know. Gifts need to wrapped, cookies need to be baked&#8230;but I feel so much better when I do something active first thing in the morning (before the unexpected interruptions happen).\u00a0 Keith bought me this <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2SpWxO6\">Power Guidance<\/a> travel workout set that I keep in the car for some muscle-building exercises.\u00a0 I also love<a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/ca\/app\/nike+-training-club-workouts\/id301521403?mt=8\">\u00a0the Nike app<\/a> because I don&#8217;t have to think about what to do (they have fantastic 15-20 minute workouts).\u00a0 Best case scenario, I get out of the house for an uninterrupted sweat session!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6310\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1357.jpg\" alt=\"mom workout\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1357.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1357-480x640.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 768px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>I Do My 5 Minute Journal.<\/strong>\u00a0 I wish I was one who could pull off an hour meditation, but I can&#8217;t find the time or patience for it (even knowing all the benefits).\u00a0 But I needed something to help me set the right intention for the day.\u00a0 Something that only took minutes.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/34O4tLC\">This 5 minute journal<\/a> makes a BIG difference in my day (and what I need to do to make it great).\u00a0 In fact, I love doing it with the kids as a gratitude exercise during this time of year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6266\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/5-minute-journal-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"5 minute journal\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/5-minute-journal-980x551.jpg 980w, http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/5-minute-journal-480x270.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>During the Day:<\/h2>\n<p><b>We Do the Kindness Calendar.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>I was getting frustrated with the holidays becoming all about the presents, and wanted my girls to focus on what&#8217;s more important. Being kind to themselves and others. This advent calendar (<a href=\"https:\/\/mykindnesscalendar.com\/\">My Kindness Calendar)<\/a> has been an amazing tool that is prompting positive conversations and activities at home.\u00a0 The girls are proud to announce something kind they are doing each day.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6309\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/my-kindness-calendar.jpg\" alt=\"Kindness Calendar\" width=\"800\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/my-kindness-calendar.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/my-kindness-calendar-480x384.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 800px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>I Don&#8217;t Watch The News.<\/strong> With so much negativity in the news these days it gives me anxiety. \u00a0Another form of stress (when we have enough of it in our lives) that spikes our cortisol and wreaks havoc on our bodies (our weight, immune system, and overall health). \u00a0I need to step away and take in all the goodness around me.<\/p>\n<h2>At Meals:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>I Fuel My Family.<\/strong> \u00a0I know the gingerbread and holiday treats can be a little much. Well, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2018\/12\/5-holiday-party-hacks-so-youre-kids-eat-better\/\">these are the 5 holiday hacks I use to make sure my kids eat better<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I Eat PFC Every Three Hours.<\/strong> \u00a0Not KFC! \u00a0 PFC = Protein &#8211; Fat &#8211; Carbs. \u00a0When you combine all 3 macronutrients at your meals and snacks it helps keep your blood sugar stable. \u00a0 Don&#8217;t just have an apple or a cookie (because you&#8217;re saving yourself for the big meal). The carb alone with send your blood glucose way up and way back down &#8211; to the point where your body <em>will crave<\/em> cookies and sugar more than normal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I Put My Fork Down Between Bites.<\/strong> Or at least I try to remember to do so!\u00a0 I&#8217;m a foodie and get a little too excited seeing the yummy nibbles.\u00a0 So instead of shovelling food in<\/p>\n<p><strong>I Bring the Superpower Foods Placemat&#8230;everywhere.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>There&#8217;s always new foods present at holiday parties so I bring enough mats for the littles to explore foods they wouldn&#8217;t try otherwise.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/placemat\">This game-changing mealtime tool<\/a> works like a charm!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6308\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/dbsp-4-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Superpower Foods Placemat\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/dbsp-4-1-980x653.jpg 980w, http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/dbsp-4-1-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>At night:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>We Watch &#8220;It&#8217;s a Wonderful Life&#8221;. \u00a0<\/strong> Because life is wonderful! \u00a0And these feel good movies make me feel so good (and teach the kids a few life lessons at the same time).<\/p>\n<p><strong>I Sip Egg Nog.<\/strong>\u00a0 That is, my nutritionist-approved version that ACTUALLY tastes good. \u00a0As a kid I thought egg-nog was healthy. \u00a0Ha!\u00a0 Have you seen how grams of sugar are in those cartoons!?
