{"id":2677,"date":"2017-01-26T21:57:16","date_gmt":"2017-01-26T21:57:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/?p=2677"},"modified":"2017-10-04T12:36:15","modified_gmt":"2017-10-04T16:36:15","slug":"5-reasons-why-kids-picky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2017\/01\/5-reasons-why-kids-picky\/","title":{"rendered":"5 reasons why kids are picky eaters (and what to do about it)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Dear god, why won&#8217;t she\u00a0just eat?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the question I asked myself daily a few years ago. \u00a0Actually, who&#8217;s kidding who. \u00a0I asked it <em>every<\/em>\u00a0stinking\u00a0time I put food in front of my little one. \u00a0She was underweight (major source of stress for me) and had zero interest in food. \u00a0I desperately wanted\u00a0to know the reasons why kids are picky eaters and\u00a0how to fix it.<\/p>\n<p>The most painful part was watching her eat (or not eat) next to other little kids her age. \u00a0Those\u00a0moms were chatting away, sipping coffee, and smiling while their little ones noshed on a smorgasbord of food.<\/p>\n<p>No bribing, no trickery or iPads to distract them.<\/p>\n<p>They just ate.<\/p>\n<p>However, if those moms looked <em>my<\/em> way they would see an anxious mother, struggling to smile, while begging\u00a0a little girl to have a bite. Just one bite of the meal I\u00a0worked so hard to prepare. \u00a0The comparisons killed me. \u00a0And of course, while watching other kids with envy, that question became even more urgent.<\/p>\n<p>If I simply knew the reasons <em>why<\/em> kids became picky eater<i>s,\u00a0<\/i>I could find ways to help her. \u00a0And, it would help me get through the mealtime misery.<\/p>\n<p>I was already a Certified Nutritionist and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2016\/08\/high-calorie-foods-kids\/\">knew what to feed a smaller child with a limited appetite<\/a>. \u00a0But I lacked what was even more important.<\/p>\n<p>I needed to know what was driving her picky\u00a0eating,\u00a0so I could determine how to\u00a0approach meals.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to be able to sit down at a table and feel 110% confident that I wasn&#8217;t &#8216;messing her up&#8217; by bribing and begging\u00a0her to eat. \u00a0Heck, even I\u00a0have a few lingering food issues from my childhood and I don&#8217;t want to be the reason my girls feel the need to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2016\/01\/clean-plate-syndrome\/\">eat\u00a0everything on their plate<\/a>. \u00a0Or feel bad for eating a piece of chocolate cake.<\/p>\n<p>Thus the research began, and I obtained Certifications in children&#8217;s feeding while\u00a0digging into the research on\u00a0&#8216;picky eating&#8217;. \u00a0It\u00a0was a long process of learning and trying, but it was eye-opening.<\/p>\n<p>That feeling of not knowing why\u00a0consumed me for too long. \u00a0I was her mom and needed to trust myself at meals. \u00a0I finally did.<\/p>\n<p>But it all started with understanding the why behind her picky eating behaviours.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1920 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4127-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Reasons Why Kids are Picky eaters\" width=\"635\" height=\"476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4127-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4127-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4127-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4127-610x458.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4127-510x382.jpg 510w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4127-1080x810.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4127.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #fe547b;\">5 Reasons Why Kids are Picky<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>They just aren&#8217;t hungry. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s as simple as that really. \u00a0I know I expected my daughter to eat more than she needed. \u00a0Sitting next to other kids who were demolishing a bowl of pasta, while Sienna filled up on a cucumber slice didn&#8217;t help. But every child&#8217;s caloric needs vary depending on a few things including their activity level, growth rate (are they going through a growth spurt?) and metabolism (some burn slower than others).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Give this a try:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask yourself:\u00a0If your child doesn&#8217;t clear their plate or eat at all, does that mean they should still be hungry? \u00a0Do we REALLY know exactly how much they need? \u00a0Did they have enough to eat earlier in the day?<\/li>\n<li>Take a closer look at your\u00a0mealtime schedule: \u00a0Are meals and snacks too close together? \u00a0Is there snacking happening throughout the day?<\/li>\n<li>Take 3 minutes to find out<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2015\/08\/4-ways-to-boost-your-childs-appetite\/\">\u00a0why they aren&#8217;t hungry and how to boost appetite<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Genetics.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Yup. \u00a0Blame their DNA.\u00a0\u00a0There are people (children included) who fall into a\u00a0category of &#8220;super-tasters&#8221;. \u00a0 Researchers can\u00a0actually determine who is a &#8220;super-taster&#8221; and will dislike a bitter food more than another person, purely based on their DNA.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A super taster is a person who experiences the sense of\u00a0<b>taste<\/b>\u00a0with far greater intensity than average, with some studies shown an increased sensitivity to bitter tastes. [They suggest that] early exposure to a diversity of flavors enables babies to trust new foods later in life. &#8220;Clearly experience is a factor in developing food habits,&#8221; says Mennella.\u00a0&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/a-matter-of-taste-180940699\/#PQSGcVhbPQxDTviy.99\">Source<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Give this a try:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Introduce a variety of flavours and foods as young as possible. Even as early as pregnancy and\u00a0breastfeeding, since flavours are transferred through the placental barrier and breastmilk. \u00a0If you&#8217;re past infant and baby stage, it&#8217;s still never too late to bring on flavours. \u00a0We have to start somewhere.<\/li>\n<li>Introduce only one new food\u00a0at a time and rotate every other day. \u00a0Research shows that putting more than one new (or non-favourite) food at a time in front of our little ones can be overwhelming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Eating is uncomfortable.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Being a foodie myself, it&#8217;s still hard\u00a0to comprehend\u00a0that one would forgo eating even when hungry. \u00a0Ultimately if eating a meal\u00a0is associated with any discomfort a child will avoid it. \u00a0That was my daughter to a tee. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t realize it until a year later though. \u00a0Sienna had poor tongue lateralization (meaning she didn&#8217;t have the skills\u00a0to efficiently chew, and would pocket food in her mouth). \u00a0Because that wasn&#8217;t challenging enough (kidding), she also had texture issues and would avoid mixed foods (i.e soup or yogurt with pieces of food in it, etc.). \u00a0 As we\u00a0worked on her eating challenges and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pickyeaterprotocol.com\">implemented my protocol<\/a>, her eating improved BIG TIME.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Give this a try: \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rule out contributing medical issues including allergies, reflux, eosinophilic esophagitis (painful allergy-related erosions of the esophagus), etc.<\/li>\n<li>Rule out or address sensory issues and\/or oral motor challenges via a feeding therapist or an Occupational Therapist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>The pressure is on.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Around18 months, our kids develop into these adorable\u00a0little people with a not-so-adorable need for independence. \u00a0They want to feel a sense of control &#8211; from what they wear (even if it doesn&#8217;t match) to what they eat (even if it means not eating). \u00a0If they feel a smidgen of pressure they can get their backs up. \u00a0Getting upset with our kids at meals triggers a fight or flight response and ultimately shuts down their appetite.<\/p>\n<p>Have you every noticed your child eat something new when you&#8217;re not looking over their shoulder, bribing with cookies, threatening with toys, or just simply saying &#8220;have one more bite&#8221;? \u00a0These are all forms of &#8216;pressure&#8217; in the eyes of our little ones. \u00a0Before studying children&#8217;s eating in depth, I used all of these innocent (so I thought) tactics, only realizing afterwards that they were counterproductive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Give this a try:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the next meal, say nothing and do nothing except plop that delicious meal in\u00a0the middle of the table and ENJOY\u00a0it.<\/li>\n<li>No bribing, no nudging, and no iPads. \u00a0It&#8217;s going to be super hard but stay strong and remind yourself that these\u00a0actions (bribing, etc)\u00a0can have\u00a0longer lasting and negative impacts on their health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>Researchers have found that kids who are reminded to eat (prompting) and pushed to eat more (pressuring) may indeed eat more, and perhaps too much.
