Our body has an amazing way of trying to tell us something is up.\u00a0 But often we chalk it up to not being a problem and our new &#8216;normal&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>For your family it might be&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>Cravings<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Irritability and tantrums<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Inability to lose weight<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Inability to gain weight<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Autoimmune disease<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Fatigue<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Headaches<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Migraines<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Muscle or joint pain.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>These are all symptoms of a food sensitivity or intolerance. Let me explain!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">What is a Food Intolerance?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It is important to not confuse a <em>food intolerance<\/em> with a <em>food allergy<\/em> as they are two separate conditions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>A food intolerance<\/strong>\u00a0is the body\u2019s digestive system\u2019s response to a disagreeable food. Unlike a <strong>food allergy<\/strong>, which produces an immunological mechanism after consuming an allergen, a food intolerance produces a non-immunological reaction. For example, a person may have digestive issues after drinking cow\u2019s milk because they are unable to digest the sugar lactose \u2014 this would be called a food intolerance. If they had an immunologic response to the cow\u2019s milk, that would be characterized as a food allergy. <a href=\"https:\/\/draxe.com\/food-allergies-treatments-natural-remedies\/\">Source<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>Food intolerances<\/em><\/strong> do not involve the immune system and are generally not life-threatening.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Food allergies<\/em><\/strong> do involve the immune system and can be life threatening.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that there\u2019s excellent research to show that children outgrow early food sensitivities more often than not. The exceptions are celiac disease (allergy to wheat) and peanut allergy, when tend to be lifelong.<\/p>\n<p>More on the differentiation of food intolerances vs. allergies <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidswithfoodallergies.org\/page\/food-intolerances.aspx\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.T<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">Common Food Triggers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Food intolerances can result from many different foods or additives, and the symptoms may appear more slowly than an allergic reaction.<\/p>\n<p>The 8 most common food intolerances\/sensitivities include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wheat<\/li>\n<li>Milk<\/li>\n<li>Eggs<\/li>\n<li>Fish<\/li>\n<li>Shellfish<\/li>\n<li>Tree nuts<\/li>\n<li>Peanuts<\/li>\n<li>Soybean<\/li>\n<li>Sugar (yup!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As well as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Food additives<\/li>\n<li>Monosodium Glutamate<\/li>\n<li>Artificial colours\/ preservatives<\/li>\n<li>Artificial sweeteners<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And the list goes on.\u00a0 Often over-consuming a food can prompt an intolerance over time.\u00a0 For example, the overconsumption of almonds in the form of almond butters and almond milk is starting to cause problems for some family members.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/pexels-photo-568027.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4086\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/pexels-photo-568027.jpg\" alt=\"food intolerances\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/pexels-photo-568027.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/pexels-photo-568027-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/pexels-photo-568027-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/pexels-photo-568027-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/pexels-photo-568027-610x407.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/pexels-photo-568027-1080x721.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">5 Common Food Intolerance Symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Food intolerances are hard to detect in your family, because you and your little ones can react right away or hours\/days later.\u00a0 I would simply start to pay attention to how everyone is feeling, especially if the following common symptoms start to appear.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">Behaviour Changes<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>That might not just be a temper tantrum because you took away their Cheerios.\u00a0 Your child&#8217;s ups and downs may be trying to tell you something.\u00a0 Various food intolerances can trigger unwanted behaviours, including sugar!\u00a0 Sugar intolerance is particularly common in children with neurobehavioral disorders like ADHD and Autism.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If your child has candida (a yeast overgrowth) it can effect behaviour.\u00a0 Candida feeds on sugar and can be the reason many of us crave sweet stuff (it&#8217;s the candida that wants it!).<\/li>\n<li>If your child has a &#8220;trigger food&#8221; the body produces <strong><em>cytokines<\/em><\/strong>. As a result promoting inflammation in the brain which can lead to meltdowns, irritability, anxiety, depression, brain fog and more.\u00a0 Also known as temper tantrums. Ugh!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A word on cytokines:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A food intolerance creates an IgG reaction in the immune system.\u00a0 This causes the body to produce inflammatory chemicals called cytokines which can inflame the gut, brain or respiratory tract.\u00a0 This then affects how you or your child feels physically and emotionally.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">Fatigue and Headaches<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>A few reasons why intolerances show up as feeling tired or headaches:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not being able to digest food causes nutrient deficiencies. Thus we feel tired or moody.<\/li>\n<li>Some foods containing gluten and casein can play with brain chemistry (due to\u00a0their &#8220;morphine-like substances&#8221; called <a href=\"https:\/\/drhagmeyer.com\/the-food-opiods-caseomorphins-and-gluteomorphins\/\">gluteomorphins and casomorphins)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Possible &#8220;withdrawal&#8221; symptoms\u00a0 from certain foods can cause fatigue and headaches.<\/li>\n<li>Their bodies can&#8217;t digest foods due to lack of enzymes. The inflammation in the body can cause headaches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A word on enzymes:<\/strong>\u00a0 When an individual is unable to break down food into smaller components, it can be due to an insufficient amount of enzymes that would be used for that particular food.\u00a0 Those larger food particles can trigger a food intolerance.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Digestive enzymes are small proteins which break down food into smaller components that are possible to be absorbed by our gut. The unabsorbed food becomes a free meal for the bacteria that live in our digestive tract. If the liver, kidneys, lymph, intestines and lungs do not sufficiently &#8216;cleanse&#8217; the body, then the\u00a0skin goes to work, which is the largest\u00a0<em>organ<\/em>\u00a0weighing between 6 to 9 pounds. Reasons for developing these symptoms include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Undigested food particles accumulate in the digestive system causing fermentation leading to gas and bloating<\/li>\n<li>Undigested food particles can also pass through the intestinal walls causing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/0-10908\/9-signs-you-have-a-leaky-gut.html\">leaky gut <\/a>and irritation<\/li>\n<li>These food particles also alter the composition of microflora in the gut, leading to interchangeable bowel movements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">4 Steps to Pinpointing Family Food Intolerances<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you suspect someone in the family has a food intolerance, try a family elimination diet\u00a0to pin point the dietary culprit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 &#8211; Identify ONE food to omit for 2 weeks<\/strong> &#8211; More than one food is too hard to implement with a family.\u00a0 So I suggest dairy or gluten which are the most common triggers.\u00a0 Whether they are a problem or not you will be doing your family a favour by omitting these foods.\u00a0 Most feel better without them and even notice behavioural improvements in their children!<\/p>\n<p><strong>2 &#8211; Get some healthy swaps.<\/strong>\u00a0Before you remove those foods make sure you have alternatives ready.\u00a0 For instance, if removing gluten stock up on gluten-free options for your family&#8217;s favourites. A quality wheat-free pasta, crackers, bread, even make\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2015\/10\/healthy-pumpkin-cookies\/\">cookie recipes like this <\/a>or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2015\/09\/avocado-banana-cookies-for-picky-eaters\/\">this<\/a>.\u00a0The goal is for the whole family to be eating the same foods (no separate meals for the kids, picky or not).\u00a0 But the last thing we want is for your family to feel deprived through the elimination process.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why I help parents come up with some super yummy and simple swaps to ease them into the elimination.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3 &#8211; Keep a food and mood diary<\/strong>. Jot down everything you or your family eats and drinks (that means every single ingredient in that stir-fry or yogurt parfait). Monitor how your\/their body reacts to meals or specific foods. Keep note of any symptoms or irritations.\u00a0 Remember that intolerances can show up hours or up to 3 days afterwards!<\/p>\n<p>You can make it into a game for your kids and play &#8220;Food Detective&#8221;. Ask them to draw a happy face or sad face (or use stickers\/stamps) at the end of each meal\/day, in relation to their primary symptoms.\u00a0 &#8220;<em>How does your tummy feel today?\u00a0 How does your head feel?\u00a0 How does your skin feel?&#8221;<\/em> etc.<\/p>\n<p>Most families start to recognize &#8216;problem foods&#8217; after one week but keep it going!\u00a0 After a few weeks of being free of an assumed food trigger, you should feel more confident on whether that food needs to be removed completely.\u00a0 I love providing families with new and fun meal\/snack ideas to replace their previous food triggers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4 &#8211;
