Virtually every day, and at every meal.\u00a0 It was hard trying to feed a little girl who was tiny (not on the growth chart kind of &#8220;tiny&#8221;) yet wouldn&#8217;t eat. There were many sad tears shed when she would hold food in her mouth for-e-ver.<\/p>\n<p>Or when I would make something I KNEW she would like, only to have her push it away.<\/p>\n<p>Or when I had to chase her around with a spoon.<\/p>\n<p>But any parent with a &#8220;picky eater&#8221; knows there are happy tears too!<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are three distinct moments when I can recall wanting to cry, and shed tears of joy (for a change!).\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>(1) When Sienna ate meat (sausage)<\/em> &#8211; a whole one &#8211; after struggling to get her to take a bite for ages. That was a few years ago, and now she eats and loves all meat.\u00a0 Even the gamier ones like lamb. I&#8217;m still shocked.<\/p>\n<p><em>(2) When Sienna told me she was hungry.<\/em>\u00a0 Our daughter had NEVER told us she was hungry, and didn&#8217;t have much of an appetite.\u00a0 I know now that much of that was a result of the negative associations she had with mealtimes\/food (because anxiety &#8211;&gt; leads to increased adrenaline &#8211;&gt; which leads to a decrease in appetite). The day she asked for food and said those four magical words &#8220;I<em> am hung-y mommy<\/em>&#8221; was probably one of the happiest moments of my life.\u00a0 Keith was home and we both looked at each other in utter disbelief. That&#8217;s when I knew we were doing all the right things at meals to help her develop a better relationship with food.\u00a0 [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/webinar\">I talk more about those in this FREE Webinar<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>(3) And just a few weeks ago, when\u00a0<em>Sienna ate a salad.<\/em>\u00a0 I almost died!\u00a0 Virtually every parent wants to celebrate when their child eats a vegetable.\u00a0 But a bowl of mixed veggies takes that celebration to the next level.\u00a0 Am I right?<\/p>\n<p>She was sitting at the kitchen counter with her friend and Naomi and I placed supper in front of them. Again, another nonchalant &#8220;sure&#8221; from me (while having a party inside).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-4576 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1138-e1525884834995-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"728\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1138-e1525884834995-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1138-e1525884834995-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1138-e1525884834995-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1138-e1525884834995-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1138-e1525884834995-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1138-e1525884834995-610x610.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1138-e1525884834995-1080x1080.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1138-e1525884834995.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After she went to bed I almost cracked a bottle of champagne (I don&#8217;t even really like champagne but it seemed appropriate!).<\/p>\n<p>Instead I decided to write this post and give you hope (and a few great ideas for making a kid-friendly salad!).<\/p>\n<p><strong>First you must know that salads are HARD for a few reasons:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Greens are tough to chew (and honestly don&#8217;t taste that good in comparison to other veggies or foods)<\/li>\n<li>Mixed foods are a no-no for many kids, especially mixed veggies!<\/li>\n<li>They require different sensory\/motor skills &#8211; to manage the lettuce, tomatoes, and other ingredients.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a lot going on in some salads.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But don&#8217;t let that discourage you!<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what you can do to help your child show some interest in salad.\u00a0 At least a kid-friendly salad.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How to Make a Kid-Friendly Salad (and Picky Eater Friendly)<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">Make a salad with ONE ingredient<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-4570 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1105-e1525885184342-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Kid-friendly salad\" width=\"780\" height=\"780\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1105-e1525885184342-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1105-e1525885184342-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1105-e1525885184342-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1105-e1525885184342-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1105-e1525885184342-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1105-e1525885184342-610x610.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1105-e1525885184342-1080x1080.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1105-e1525885184342.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Offering too many in one bowl will set off alarm bells.\u00a0 Instead JUST chop cup cucumber, or just tomato, or just carrots.\u00a0 Ideally it&#8217;s one of the veggies they do like to eat.\u00a0 Then toss it with dressing.\u00a0 If they only eat fruit, make it a fruit salad.\u00a0 There are no rules when it comes to salad&#8230;.especially with fussier eaters.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">Choose a tasty dressing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s kind of simple when it comes to kids.\u00a0 If it doesn&#8217;t taste good, they won&#8217;t eat it.\u00a0 So the dressing matters big time!\u00a0 It&#8217;s the first thing they taste &#8211; not the veggies themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, I&#8217;m not the most creative when it comes to making yummy dressings. So if you&#8217;re like me, don&#8217;t feel guilty about buying a bottle of pre-made dressing. There are quality ones out there with non-hydrogenated oils, sugars, etc. <a href=\"http:\/\/michellesrawfoodz.com\/\">I like this one<\/a>.\u00a0 The perk is that I&#8217;m more likely to eat more salads too (because it&#8217;s quicker to use a bottled version vs. making my own).<\/p>\n<p>But when I do make dressing, this is our go-to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2KOYzkr\">Apple cider vinegar<\/a> or freshly squeezed lemon juice (1 tbsp)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2wtKnKE\">Olive oil<\/a> (1 tbsp)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2rxGnTE\">Dijon mustard<\/a> (1 tbsp)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2rCgG4H\">Honey<\/a> or maple syrup (1 tsp) &#8211; I only add sometimes but the sweetness helps!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">Skip the lettuce (for now)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4569 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Kale-Salad-1.jpg\" alt=\"Kid-friendly salad\" width=\"700\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Kale-Salad-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Kale-Salad-1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Kale-Salad-1-610x405.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I know I&#8217;m gushing because Sienna ate a leafy arugula salad.\u00a0 But we didn&#8217;t go from no salad to this.\u00a0 She&#8217;s been eating chopped salads for a few months or longer so the transition to one with leaves was easier.\u00a0 For now, start with crunchy veggies only.\u00a0 Or even better their favourite veggies or other foods (doesn&#8217;t just have to be veggies!).\u00a0 See below.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">Don&#8217;t call it a &#8220;salad&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Some where down the line, kids made the connection that salads are mom and dad foods. That&#8217;s why they do better with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">M<\/span>ake <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Y<\/span>our <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">O<\/span>wn Tacos and Pizzas.\u00a0 They get to choose what&#8217;s going on and in their food.<\/p>\n<p>Try the same logic with salads.\u00a0 Put at least 3 bowls on the table with different items (chopped) they can put in their bowl.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cherry tomatoes<\/li>\n<li>Cucumbers<\/li>\n<li>Celery root \/ celeriac<\/li>\n<li>Celery<\/li>\n<li>Carrots<\/li>\n<li>Bell peppers<\/li>\n<li>Blueberries<\/li>\n<li>Romaine lettuce (the ribs are best)<\/li>\n<li>Cabbage<\/li>\n<li>Apples<\/li>\n<li>Grapes<\/li>\n<li>Raisins<\/li>\n<li>Dried cranberries<\/li>\n<li>Roasted chickpeas<\/li>\n<li>Chopped chicken (ideally free-range)<\/li>\n<li>Hard boiled egg (ideally free-range)<\/li>\n<li>Smoked salmon<\/li>\n<li>Canned salmon or tuna (preferably sustainably caught fish <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2wow0re\">like this<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ideas are endless!\u00a0 We just need to get out of the &#8220;salad&#8221; mentality and look at other kid-faves that they can toss together.<\/p>\n<p>We have our chopped salad at least once a week, just varying the ingredients (romaine, peppers, cucumber, tomato, and avocado are the staples).
