{"id":4950,"date":"2018-08-30T21:01:52","date_gmt":"2018-08-31T01:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/?p=4950"},"modified":"2019-09-11T15:49:55","modified_gmt":"2019-09-11T19:49:55","slug":"how-to-survive-back-to-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2018\/08\/how-to-survive-back-to-school\/","title":{"rendered":"How I survive back-to-school (8 things you must do!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year was my first back-to-school experience and it was bitter sweet.<\/p>\n<p>My first born, Sienna, was going into Junior Kindergarten and I had no clue what to expect.\u00a0 So in the days leading up to her first day of school I was a mix (and a mess) of emotions&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8230;Excited<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(this was a new chapter for all of us)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8230;Sad<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(she was growing up too fast)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8230;Worried<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(I didn&#8217;t know if my former &#8216;picky eater&#8217; would starve)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8230;Overwhelmed<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(the thought of packing lunches for the school year was just too much)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When I dropped her off that first day I was a sobbing mess.\u00a0 You see, this little girl had one hell of a ride in her short life of 4 years.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230;Growth issues<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230;Heart surgeries<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230;Countless doctor&#8217;s appointments<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230;Developmental delays<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230;Speech therapy<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230;And she was one of the worst eaters on the planet.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t bear the thought of leaving my vulnerable child and picky eater for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>While we had a few rough mornings with Sienna clinging to my legs at drop off.\u00a0 Yet\u00a0overall, we survived the school year.\u00a0 And she was always smiling when the bell rang at the end of the day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So there were a few reasons things went WAY smoother than I expected for our first back-to-school experience.<\/p>\n<p>We did a couple things that saved our sanity.\u00a0 And we will 100% continue to do them this year.<\/p>\n<p>Here they are&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\"><strong>TIP #1:\u00a0<\/strong> Wear sunglasses\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Dropping this little girl off at school (and knowing she would be alone in a new place) was terrifying.\u00a0 The tears, oh the tears!\u00a0 Despite being a cloudy morning, I opted to wear sunglasses walking Sienna to school last year for the first week.<\/p>\n<p>Handing her over to complete strangers felt so unnatural!<\/p>\n<p>And Naomi made it worse when she cried saying &#8220;<em>Mommy, why are we leaving Sienna all alone? I want her to come home with us<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Cue more tears!!<\/p>\n<p>So my first tip for newbies like me is to WEAR SUNGLASSES on that first week of school.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not for the faint of heart!<\/p>\n<p>Stay positive though.\u00a0 Things get better after a few weeks and eventually sunglasses are no longer needed.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 720px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-4950-1\" width=\"720\" height=\"1280\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_1123.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_1123.mp4\">http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_1123.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My next stress was the infamous lunch box. Every parent seemed to be talking about them on Facebook groups and it stressed me out!\u00a0 But I surprised myself.<\/p>\n<p>Packing her little lunch box was&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Dare I say&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Fun?!<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen is my happy place, so being able to spend more time in it is always welcomed.\u00a0I also loved the challenge of coming up with ideas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But I can see why parents dread packing lunches.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Trying to be creative and find foods your kids will eat for 190 days of the year is draining!\u00a0 Especially the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/webinar\">picky eaters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So I have a few lunch packing sanity savers for you next&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\"><strong>TIP #2:<\/strong> Pack lunch post dinner\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Trying to prep lunch and snacks during the morning rush is a recipe for disaster.\u00a0 Last time I tried that, I forgot to include utensils and Sienna had to eat a stir-fry with her hands.\u00a0 Whoops!<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230;I highly recommend doing the lunch prep (for you and the kids) while you&#8217;re putting dinner away. The dishes are already out so why not right?<\/p>\n<p>Then that frees up at least 5 minutes in the morning, so you can make yourself a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2017\/08\/3-energy-boosting-smoothies-you-need-to-try-right-now\/\">yummy energy-boosting smoothie<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\"><strong>TIP #3:\u00a0<\/strong> Keep a list of their &#8220;green&#8221; foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Is it just me, or is your brain cluttered with everything you have to remember.<\/p>\n<p>Doctor&#8217;s appointments.<\/p>\n<p>Swimming classes.<\/p>\n<p>Birthday parties.<\/p>\n<p>Class trips.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take one thing off your mind when it comes lunches.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I like to keep a running list of Sienna&#8217;s go-to foods so I don&#8217;t have to rack my brain every night.\u00a0 I know what those foods are, but with all the other &#8220;noise&#8221; in my head and distractions, I usually only resort to a shorter list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unless I have my trusty list.\u00a0 That&#8217;s my world opens up and her lunch gets more interesting!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To avoid serving your child the same foods all week, take a few minutes to jot down ALL their &#8220;green&#8221; foods (these are the items they will eat at least 50% of the time).\u00a0\u00a0Every time they eat something new, add it to the list!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be as detailed as you can.\u00a0 A cooked carrot is different from a raw one &#8211; both from a nutritional and sensory perspective (appearance\/texture\/taste).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So no need to overthink lunches everyday.<\/p>\n<p>You can simply glance and grab.<\/p>\n<p>I can boldly say that by having a list,\u00a0you will stay out of the lunch and snack rut and offer more variety.\u00a0 This is key for nipping <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/webinar\">picky eating<\/a> in the bud.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\"><strong>TIP #4:<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">Get a good lunch box<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-4954 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0080-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Lunch box ideas\" width=\"596\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0080-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0080-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0080-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0080-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0080-610x458.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0080-510x382.jpg 510w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0080-1080x810.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here are a few things to look for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Leak-proof (pasta sauce sneaking onto their apple slices won&#8217;t go over well!)<\/li>\n<li>Sections that are big enough to hold larger items and small enough for dips<\/li>\n<li>Lightweight enough for your child to carry<\/li>\n<li>Strong enough to sustain a few drops<\/li>\n<li>Easy to open (lunches are short, so I didn&#8217;t want Sienna to waste her time fiddling with her lunch box)<\/li>\n<li>Easy to wash because you&#8217;ll be doing it daily!
