{"id":5126,"date":"2018-11-01T23:45:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T03:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/?p=5126"},"modified":"2019-10-29T16:04:11","modified_gmt":"2019-10-29T20:04:11","slug":"halloween-treats-how-to-handle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2018\/11\/halloween-treats-how-to-handle\/","title":{"rendered":"5 tricks I use for managing Halloween treats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Anyone else have a heck of a time managing their kids obsession with all sugary things &#8211; especially Halloween treats?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">As a Certified Nutritionist I know the ins and outs of what foods to avoid.\u00a0 Sugar is at the top of the list. And then there&#8217;s all the research pointing fingers at sugar for contributing to health concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><em>In 2017-18, <strong>4.8 million kids<\/strong> ages 10 to 17 had obesity, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childhealthdata.org\/learn-about-the-nsch\/NSCH\">National Survey of Children\u2019s Health<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><em>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nhanes\/index.htm\"> National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey<\/a> found <strong>18.5% of kids<\/strong> ages 2 to 19 had obesity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">The\u00a0<b>incidence of type 2 diabetes in youth<\/b> has increased dramatically over the past 20 years. In the U.S., estimates are as high as 5,000 new cases per year according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/care.diabetesjournals.org\/content\/39\/9\/1635\">ADA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">The impact of sugar doesn&#8217;t stop there.\u00a0 It&#8217;s associated with other health concerns including behavourial issues among children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">So naturally my instinct was to keep any and all sugar out of the hands of my kids.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">But having also studied how food \/ feeding approaches affect children in the long term (i.e. eating disorders, emotional eating, and yes even obesity), I chose to handle treats a little differently the past few years.\u00a0<br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/>Before I dive in and reveal my approach, know that I\u00a0place no judgement on anyone for what they decide to do.\u00a0 Parenting is hard stuff!!\u00a0 Add sugar into the mix and it gets even harder!\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">Just do what feels\u00a0right in your gut.\u00a0<br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/>So without further adieu,\u00a0<span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">here are&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"><strong>5\u00a0tricks I use for managing Halloween treats<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">\u200b\u200b<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5129 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0626-e1541129767896-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"614\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0626-e1541129767896-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0626-e1541129767896-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0626-e1541129767896-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0626-e1541129767896-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0626-e1541129767896-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0626-e1541129767896-610x610.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0626-e1541129767896-1080x1080.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0626-e1541129767896.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/span><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">#1 &#8211; LET THEM GO TO TOWN.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Yup, I let the kids go nuts on their candy and eat as much as they like.\u00a0 It sounds like bad parenting, I know!\u00a0 But by the time they get indoors, take off their costumes, sort out their candy, then re-sort it five more times, \u200bthey only end up eating ~5 pieces max.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><strong><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Before going free-for-all with candy, what\u00a0usually\u00a0happened\u00a0was this&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">We would say\u200b\u200b\u00a0&#8220;you\u00a0can ONLY have two pieces&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">B\u200but they would beg and beg<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">S\u200bo we would let them have another two pieces<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">But then they would\u00a0beg and CRY for\u00a0more<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">So we&#8217;d give in, or deal with\u00a0tantrums.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">\u200b\u200b\u200bIn the end, they ended up having those 5 pieces anyways!\u00a0So now I just let them enjoy until bedtime, without saying NO a million times. But when my husband takes them trick-or-treating they magically hit\u00a0every\u00a0darn home on the street (read:\u00a0Keith was craving the ol&#8217; sweets and used his children as a vehicle to fill his\u00a0pockets).\u00a0<br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/>That&#8217;s when\u00a0I move to tip #3.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">#3 &#8211; STORE\u00a0HALF THE CANDY.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Depending on how much they come home with, I&#8217;ll pack some of it away in the cupboard. Out of sight out of mind &#8211; for adults and kids!\u00a0 This way they are left with a reasonable (about\u00a020 pieces)\u00a0to spread out over the\u00a0following days. The rest goes to Keith&#8217;s office (or gets eaten in the car on his way there!).\u00a0<span class=\"ac-designer-copy\" spellcheck=\"false\" data-offset-key=\"fbua4-1-0\">#Illneverknow<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">#4 &#8211; OFFER CANDY WHEN NOT EXPECTED.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">I then give the girls one piece in their lunch box every day for the next week &#8211; ideally before they ask me.\u00a0They realize that they don&#8217;t need to beg me, or sneak candy, because mommy is happily doling it out.\u00a0\u00a0And then I might offer another piece with dinner periodically.\u00a0 All of this to make these palatable foods accessible, but not obsessed over.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">#5 &#8211; SHOW THEM HOW TO SAVOUR<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">Research shows that when<span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">\u00a0we take the time to taste our food<\/span>, we eat less.\u00a0 So I&#8217;m really trying to teach the girls mindfulness at meals, especially when eating &#8220;treats&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">\u200b\u200bI asked them to close their eyes and guess what colour gummy they were eating.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">\u200bI\u200b\u00a0asked what it tasted like, or reminded them of.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">\u200bI asked them how long they could keep it in their mouth before swallowing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">This way they weren&#8217;t ramming jube-jubes in their mouth without thought.\u00a0 \u200b\u200b<br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/>It was amazing to see them ration their stash, and even take a bite out of a chocolate and ask to save it for tomorrow.\u00a0 They are learning how to manage their intake already.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">I also try to teach my kids that a treat doesn&#8217;t have to be unhealthy.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why I chose one of our favourite healthy snacks for Halloween.\u00a0 Good old <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seasnax.com\/\">SeaSnax<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5128 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0623-e1541129609305-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Halloween Treats\" width=\"683\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0623-e1541129609305-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0623-e1541129609305-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0623-e1541129609305-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0623-e1541129609305-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0623-e1541129609305-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0623-e1541129609305-610x610.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0623-e1541129609305-1080x1080.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0623-e1541129609305.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">I know&#8230;you think I&#8217;m nuts for doling out sea vegetables for Halloween.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">Given that 95% of houses would likely be giving out chocolate or candy, there was room for something different.\u00a0 Plus, I would be happy if there were leftovers! (I love SeaSnax!)\u00a0 However, I was surprised to see and hear that children were pretty thrilled to see something different in their pumpkins and pillow cases.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">I actually heard one little boy yell &#8220;<em>Mommy look!\u00a0 It&#8217;s SeaSnax!<\/em>&#8221; Ultimately it\u00a0doesn\u2019t help children learn\u00a0how to manage candy long-term.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7mop1-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">A &#8216;better&#8217; way is to\u00a0give your child the choice &#8211;\u00a0whether they would like to trade it\u00a0for\u00a0a trip to the movies, book, etc or keep the candy (although some experts would still frown upon this).<\/span><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7mop1-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7mop1-0-0\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7b1kc-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">TEACHING THEM TODAY, FOR TOMORROW.<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7b1kc-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">\u200b\u200bIt&#8217;s beneficial to keep these &#8216;treats&#8217; around because it helps our kids learn how to behave around palatable foods, like Halloween\u00a0candy. They also see how their parents behave around these treats, and control their intake (ideally without guilt)\u00a0which influences their behaviour. Because a young adult who is\u00a0never\u00a0exposed to &#8220;palatable foods&#8221; (aka\u00a0Halloween\u00a0candy) will have a tough time eating them without shame\/guilt.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7mop1-0-0\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">FOOD SHOULDN&#8217;T HAVE POWER.<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">\u200bOur effort to\u00a0see\u00a0our kids\u00a0eat\u00a0less\u00a0candy can have the opposite effect (i.e. they try to get as much as possible when they get the chance, because it&#8217;s\u00a0restricted at home).\u00a0 Hence, forbidding or restricting Halloween treats can give them WAY\u00a0more power than they deserve.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/daniellebinns.kartra.com\/checkout\/mealplanningworkshop\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6189 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Copy-of-Dining-out-with-Kids-PEP-Bonus-Kit-screenshot.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Copy-of-Dining-out-with-Kids-PEP-Bonus-Kit-screenshot.png 560w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Copy-of-Dining-out-with-Kids-PEP-Bonus-Kit-screenshot-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Copy-of-Dining-out-with-Kids-PEP-Bonus-Kit-screenshot-480x270.png 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><strong>These perspectives gave me the push to change my approach with Halloween.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not perfect, but I&#8217;m trying to set good habits now for my girls, so they can grow up with healthy mindset around all foods &#8211; be it kale or a Kit Kat bar.\u00a0<\/strong><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/>I realize I&#8217;m\u00a0sharing extremes here, yet\u00a0treats are likely not 100% forbidden in your \u200b\u200bhome.\u00a0 So\u00a0take and apply what works for you and your family.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\">And finally, my highlight from Halloween wasn&#8217;t the candy or these 5 tricks.\u00a0 It was my little girl getting so excited to dress up as her idol &#8211;
