{"id":5233,"date":"2018-12-10T16:36:56","date_gmt":"2018-12-10T21:36:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/?p=5233"},"modified":"2019-02-02T10:22:55","modified_gmt":"2019-02-02T15:22:55","slug":"picky-eater-unknown-facts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2018\/12\/picky-eater-unknown-facts\/","title":{"rendered":"Two unknown facts about picky eaters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most parents come to me for help with getting their kids to EAT &#8211;&nbsp;without hearing them say YUCK before they even try it. #frustrating!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/about\">parent of a child who was underweight<\/a>, I totally understand why!&nbsp; We want our children to consume the nutrients they need to grow and thrive.&nbsp; And sometimes we&#8217;re successful getting them to put new foods in their mouth, by offering cookies as a bribe, sneaking it into their smoothies, or begging them to take two bites.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But personally, even if my daughter took those bites, I didn&#8217;t feel great about it.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Because she didn&#8217;t try broccoli on their own.&nbsp; She ate it to get a cookie. Or to get me off her back.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After helping hundreds of parents navigate the frustrations around feeding their children, including my own extremely picky eater, I discovered a &#8216;shortcut&#8217; so-to-speak on how to help kids accept new foods FASTER.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was only once I realized two really important things about why kids eat so poorly.&nbsp; Two facts that I talk about in my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/freewebinar\">Free webinar<\/a>&nbsp;(and when I train schools\/childcare facilities) that parents (and teachers) need to know if they want to see real changes.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>TWO unknown facts about feeding children:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size has-pale-pink-background-color\"><strong>UNKNOWN FACT #1&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I always thought eating was easy &#8211; everyone gets hungry and needs to eat right?&nbsp; But as a mom of a former picky eater I know that&#8217;s not true.&nbsp;<strong>Eating is one of the most difficult tasks we do as humans.&nbsp;<\/strong> It&#8217;s more difficult than walking or talking. This then hinders their appetite (and there&#8217;s definitely no motivation to try new foods when they aren&#8217;t hungry!).&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Without fear<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Most children go through &#8220;food neophobia&#8221; and need help navigating this fear (vs. succumbing to it).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll notice your child often gravitates to their favourite foods, even when presented with other delicious options.&nbsp; That&#8217;s because&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Familiar foods<\/strong> are COMFORTING and EASY.&nbsp; <\/li><li><strong>New foods<\/strong> are SCARY and HARD.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So we <em>could<\/em> simply call it a day, and offer their favourite foods.&nbsp; However, this doesn&#8217;t quite help expand their shrinking list of 10 to 20 foods.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Instead, the answer is to introduce foods in a way that makes they EASY to explore (and eat) and removes the FEAR around eating them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s something I really hammer home when&nbsp;I teach &#8211; parents, schools, childcare facilities and health professionals.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it&#8217;s something <em>every parent, teacher, doctor, nutritionist, naturopath, dietician (anyone who works with children) should know.&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/daniellebinns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_1085.jpg?fit=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5300\" width=\"434\" height=\"578\"\/><figcaption>Here I&#8217;m running &#8220;Food School&#8221; with the staff and students at a Montessori school.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So I created a step-by-step  &#8216;system&#8217; that I could make accessible to everyone.
