And my daughters love it, especially in chili!<\/p>\n<p>Now let&#8217;s get into the\u00a0<em>&#8216;meat&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>of it \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #fe547b;\">First, should we even be eating beef?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve\u00a0been bombarded with the media telling us\u00a0that\u00a0meat and beef consumption is linked to heart disease, cancer and other health issues.\u00a0 This of course, was scary especially when I thought about feeding meat to my daughter who had a congenital heart condition.<\/p>\n<p>But when I\u00a0looked more closely, the opposite\u00a0appeared to be\u00a0true.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what the studies tell\u00a0us (and why I chose a lifestyle that includes meat).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a class=\"ac-designer-copy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2885952\/\" data-ac-default-color=\"1\">Meat consumption is not\u00a0linked to heart disease<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"><a class=\"ac-designer-copy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2885952\/\" data-ac-default-color=\"1\">Meat consumption is\u00a0not\u00a0linked to colorectal\u00a0cancer<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"ac-designer-copy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8842068\" data-ac-default-color=\"1\">Meat eaters are living longer than vegans\/vegetarians<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u200b<br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/>There&#8217;s a longer list of <a href=\"https:\/\/chriskresser.com\/bibliography\/#nutrient-density\">studies collected here by Chris Kresser<\/a> if you want to dive in!<\/p>\n<p>So yes, I choose meat.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s not just any ol&#8217; meat.\u00a0 We choose the best\u00a0beef out there.\u00a0 \u00a0Let&#8217;s talk about what that is&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5691 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grass-fed-1024x614.png\" alt=\"grass fed or grain fed\" width=\"711\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grass-fed-1024x614.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grass-fed-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grass-fed-768x461.png 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grass-fed-610x366.png 610w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grass-fed-1080x648.png 1080w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grass-fed.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 711px) 100vw, 711px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #fe547b;\">Grass-fed beef or grain-fed beef?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Well, let&#8217;s start with how a cow is supposed to be fed, raised and treated.\u00a0 Cattle are naturally <strong>meant to eat grass while having the room to roam free<\/strong> in fresh air, getting exercise.\u00a0 Sounds reasonable, right?\u00a0 \u00a0On the other hand, a\u00a0diet full of grains, corn and\/or soy is unnatural for a cow and is really<strong> just intended to fatten them up<\/strong> to createmore meat to sell.<\/p>\n<p>I love the image above from <a href=\"http:\/\/featherandbone.com.hk\">Feather and Bone<\/a>. So gram for gram, grass-fed <strong>contains fewer calories<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It also\u00a0<strong>contains <em>5 times<\/em> as much omega-3 fatty acids<\/strong> compared to grain-fed beef. And we know how important omega-3s are and that most people just don&#8217;t consume enough of them. Omega-3s are so beneficial for everything from eye health to brain health to heart health!<\/li>\n<li>While\u00a0<em>all\u00a0<\/em>beef contains high amounts of vitamins B12, B3 and B6. And is rich in highly bioavailable <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2016\/06\/child_iron_intake\/\">iron (which is important for a healthy appetite<\/a>), selenium and zinc&#8230;.grass-fed beef\u00a0<em>also\u00a0<\/em>contains much <strong>higher amounts of vitamin A and vitamin E.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>not given antibiotics and growth hormones<\/strong> as part of their normal diet, unlike grain-fed cows.<\/li>\n<li>Cattle live a <strong>more humane and natural life<\/strong> compared to grain-fed cows, that are confined to living in a very small area. Grass-fed cows can digest their food and turn it into protein without upset.
