Organic fish. Wild fish.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We eat fish once a week because of all the healthy fats (and other nutrients) fish provides, however the source matters.\u00a0 Just as it does with anything else we eat.\u00a0 Our choices impact our health and the environmental.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s so much conflicting information out there (as with most things nutrition-related!).<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s find out which fish is better for us and why.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Conventionally Farmed Fish vs. Organic Farmed Fish<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Organic farmed fish<\/strong> <strong>have a higher omega-3 to omega-6 ratio<\/strong> (which is more desired!) than conventionally farmed fish. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0308814611012362\">Check out the study here<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Both conventionally farmed fish and organic farmed fish live in cramped net in conditions that can <strong>pollute the water<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is possible for vegetarian fish (like catfish and tilapia) to be organic because the feed can be controlled in organic farms. However, for carnivorous fish (like salmon) it is <strong>impossible to determine if the fish they are fed are organic<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>All\u00a0<\/em>farmed fish are subject to environmental pollution<\/strong>. This includes transfer of disease between wild and farmed fish, ocean pollution under nets (such as excrement buildup), destruction of ocean habitat and escaped farmed fish becoming an invasive species.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Antibiotics in farmed fish<\/strong> is not just an environmental issue but also a health issue for humans. Those antibiotics can contribute to the rise of more antibiotic-resistant bacteria. They also contaminate our ocean water. And, if the fish you\u2019re eating were given antibiotics, you\u2019re also ingesting those antibiotics!\u00a0 A 2015 study that compared samples of farmed fish from 11 countries found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0304389414008012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5 antibiotics in shrimp, salmon, tilapia, and trout.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Farmed fish are<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>subject to contaminants<\/strong> like antibiotics (see above), fire retardants, pesticides, dioxins, canthaxanthin (dye to make the flesh more pink), and PCBs. Check out the study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1257546\/\">here.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What are PCBs?<\/h3>\n<p>They are polychlorinated biphenyls: cancer-causing chemicals that get into fish through the processed fishmeal (made from ground up fish) they are fed in fish farms. PCBs can have a negative effect on the immune, reproductive, and endocrine systems. Check out the research from the Environmental Working Group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/research\/pcbs-farmed-salmon#.WtTdoS-ZOi4\">here.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #fe547b;\"><strong>The Bottom Line:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>All farmed fish, both conventionally farmed and organically farmed, have negative implications in the areas of environmental pollution, contaminants, and nutritional value.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/qtq80-M16DKn.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5785 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/qtq80-M16DKn-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/qtq80-M16DKn-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/qtq80-M16DKn-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/qtq80-M16DKn-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/qtq80-M16DKn-610x407.jpeg 610w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/qtq80-M16DKn-1080x720.jpeg 1080w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/qtq80-M16DKn.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008080;\">What about Wild Fish?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Benefits of Wild Fish:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Less fat.<\/strong> Because wild caught fish aren\u2019t kept in constricted environments like pens or cages, they are able to swim freely and have half the fat that farm-raised fish have. Also, wild fish have more of the heart-healthy and brain-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Safer.<\/strong>\u00a0Wild fish aren\u2019t force-fed antibiotics and pesticides so they don\u2019t contain the harmful toxins and chemicals that farmed fish do.<\/li>\n<li><strong>More ethical. <\/strong>Many are concerned about the environmental impact of farmed fish and the unpleasant conditions under which they live. \u00a0In addition, the water that these farmed fish are raised in contains antibiotics and pesticides, which are then released into the ocean and contaminate other species. Look for wild tuna, salmon, or sardines packaged in BPA-free cans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Where to buy quality wild fish:<\/h3>\n<p>No matter where you go, remember a fish shop shouldn&#8217;t smell &#8216;fishy&#8217;.
