No, you don&#8217;t understand.\u00a0 I lose sleep over the fact that our planet is hurting and so many of us aren&#8217;t willing to make small changes.\u00a0 Being a mom makes me even more crazy about the environment, plastics and now microplastics.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of plastic in everyday products changed the way we live. The paper cups that we carry our coffee in, the stretchy clothes we wear, and the buses that we take to work all contain plastics. These plastics allow us to live our lives more conveniently. However, are we aware of the negative effects of our plastic obsession?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So I asked one of my students (the wonderfully talented Leanne Acosta) to enlighten us on the latest research behind plastics.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Leanne Acosta for taking the time to research and write this&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The equivalent of 9.5 million tonnes of new plastic flow into our oceans every year<\/strong> (IUCN). I was really thirsty; It was hot, and I had been running all over the place trying to keep my two-year-old from starting any more brawls (tip: never take a 2-year-old to a party if they\u2019ve missed a nap!). The host came over to me with a bottle of water. A wave of guilt came over me. Primary microplastics are defined as less than 5 millimeters in size. Secondary microplastics are slightly bigger, and once formed large pieces of plastics. We have been led to believe that ocean waste and littering are the main causes of our plastic-filled oceans; however, many of our household activities and products are culprits.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synthetic clothing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skincare products<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dishwasher\/laundry detergent pods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teabags<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wet wipes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyres<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toothpaste<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body wash<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Primary and Secondary microplastics enter our oceans via ocean activities, wind, wastewater and road runoff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6041\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/microplastics-infographic.jpg\" alt=\"microplastics\" width=\"750\" height=\"562\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/microplastics-infographic.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/microplastics-infographic-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/microplastics-infographic-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/microplastics-infographic-610x457.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/microplastics-infographic-510x382.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Small plastics.\u00a0 Big problem.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there isn\u2019t a lot of concrete research and evidence concerning microplastics and human health, we know that microplastics are ingested by fish, and then most likely we eventually end up consuming those microplastics in the fish that we eat. There is also a concern that swimming in the ocean could put us at risk of microplastic consumption and absorption. Furthermore, plastics are even carried in the air.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plastics have also been found in humans. One study found that plastic fibers were present in 87% of the human lungs studied. Plastic alternatives I am going to share! There are steps you can take in your everyday life to 1) lessen the number of microplastics you put out into the environment 2) lessen the number of microplastics that you consume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoid buying plastic bottles (please!).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always carry a stainless steel or glass <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2018\/01\/small-healthy-changes\/\">water bottle.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2JrugBT\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ello Syndicate Water Bottle<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Contigo-Purity-Bottle-Silicone-Sleeve\/dp\/B01LVW0HZU\/ref=sr_1_18?crid=311JQJ2UXTSOR&amp;keywords=glass+water+bottle&amp;qid=1562193727&amp;s=gateway&amp;sprefix=glass+water+%2Caps%2C236&amp;sr=8-18\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contigo Purity Glass Water Bottle<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2XCpjPs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kleen Kanteen<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could also recycle a pasta jar!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoid synthetic clothing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<em>Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and other synthetic fibers \u2014 all of which are forms of plastic \u2014 are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icac.org\/cotton_info\/publications\/statistics\/world-apparel-survey\/FAO-ICAC-Survey-2013-Update-and-2011-Text.pdf\">now<\/a> about 60 percent of the material that makes up our clothes worldwide.\u00a0 Estimates vary, but it\u2019s possible that a single load of laundry could release hundreds of thousands of fibers from our clothes into the water supply.<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/the-goods\/2018\/9\/19\/17800654\/clothes-plastic-pollution-polyester-washing-machine\">Source<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are two recommendations: Buy fewer clothes, and wash only when necessary.\u00a0 Because the production of cotton and natural fibers require large amounts of water.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoid buying plastic toys when possible.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2G1RZXa\">Opt for wooden toys<\/a> (or fabrics toys as a secondary option). Better yet, recycle toys!\u00a0 One child&#8217;s junk is another child&#8217;s treasure.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For my son\u2019s last <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2016\/05\/4-ways-simplify-kids-birthday\/\">birthday<\/a>, we requested no toys, but we asked our friends and family for books. Children love playing with things you already have in the house like pots and pans or outside in the garden (supervised of course!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoid saran wraps and sandwich baggies.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep food in containers with lids or cover, or invest in some stretch lids which can be used for a variety of different sizes. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use these <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2LFdYa6\">Silicone Stretch lids<\/a> instead of saran wrap<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Refrain from storing leftovers in plastic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Store food in stainless, glass or silicone in the fridge and freezer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Opt for sustainable fish.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fish has so many nutritional benefits, so cutting fish out entirely might not be necessary. Consider buying fish that is wild and lower down the food chain such as: flounder, cod, herring and sardines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoid plastic straws.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow the bamboo straw trend!
