{"id":6345,"date":"2020-03-02T14:57:15","date_gmt":"2020-03-02T19:57:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/?p=6345"},"modified":"2020-03-02T15:16:29","modified_gmt":"2020-03-02T20:16:29","slug":"kidsmenus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2020\/03\/kidsmenus\/","title":{"rendered":"Why I can&#8217;t stand kids&#8217; menus (and what I&#8217;m doing about it)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ok, before I go into a rant on kids&#8217; menus please let me know&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How important is it to you that a restaurant (or resort\/hotel) is Family Nutritionist Approved?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d so appreciate if you let me know in the comments.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m all about positivity when it comes to feeding our family, but today I need to vent.<\/p>\n<p>You see, I&#8217;m attending the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rcshow.com\"><em>Restaurant Canada Show<\/em><\/a> this week (and just got back from a family resort in the Dominican) so both have got me thinking about kids&#8217; food and kids&#8217; menus.<\/p>\n<p>I do give restaurants and hotels credit for <em>trying<\/em> to make eating out\/traveling easier for families.\u00a0 But virtually every kids&#8217; menu is working against what parents are trying so hard to do!<\/p>\n<p>To raise health-minded kids.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a huge opportunity here because&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Restaurants are one of the best places to expose kids to new foods.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Eating out with kids provides a fabulous opportunity to explore new foods in a new environment (outside their home). The ambiance, the food is presented in an appetizing way, the aroma fuels the appetite, the meals are delicious, and the novelty of being out of the home with an appetite lends itself to an experience where children are more apt to try something new.<\/p>\n<p>But the kids&#8217; menu comes out and you get french fries and grilled cheese. Doh!<\/p>\n<p>So we shoot that opportunity in the foot when the only options are the same nutrient-lacking items.<\/p>\n<p>Here we are enjoying Teppanyaki at our resort in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bahia-principe.com\/en\/\">Bahia Principe<\/a> a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6349 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_0050-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Family friendly restaurant\" width=\"673\" height=\"505\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Kids want to learn to like new foods.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\">My other hangup is that there&#8217;s a growing number of children have eating challenges (46% of typically developing children are picky eaters). Eating is hard for them and the way food is served can make or break their willingness to eat something new.\u00a0 When they don&#8217;t eat, it takes the joy out of that dining experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Plus there&#8217;s the prevalence of dietary restrictions that families are dealing with &#8211; from minor food intolerances to true life-threatening allergies.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>2.5 million, or <strong>7.5 percent of Canadians are affected directly by food allerg<\/strong>y (Soller et al., 2012). And a total of <strong>50 percent of Canadian households<\/strong> are affected, directly or indirectly, by food allergy (Harrington et al., 2012) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/dd04\/2e317a3b2c263d45fe322b46bdbebe1e01d6.pdf\">Semantic Scholar<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So I&#8217;d really love to see restaurants and hotels step up to help remove the stress that comes with feeding kids outside the home.\u00a0 By offering foods that are easier for kids to eat without sacrificing on nutrition.\u00a0 And by taking into consideration dietary needs for families so they can eat out or in without the worry of someone falling ill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Once a family finds an eating establishment who understands their needs and makes eating out a stress-free (and healthier) experience, that family is coming back &#8211; menu, can we at least give our kids the credit they deserve?\u00a0 Counter to our beliefs, children want to be treated like adults and eat like adults, but they will take the path of least resistance when it&#8217;s offered.<\/p>\n<p>So if you only give them the choice of chicken nuggets, pizza, pasta, and fries those are the options they will choose.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6355 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_42d0.jpg\" alt=\"Kids menus\" width=\"630\" height=\"840\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_42d0.jpg 630w, http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_42d0-480x640.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 630px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>If they aren&#8217;t the only options their world opens up.\u00a0 My girls have tried so many new foods while eating out of the house.\u00a0 Olives, oysters, pesto, sundried tomatoes, yucca, pomegranate &#8211; they were all first sampled at restaurants and are now on their food list.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s Naomi eating (devouring!) mussels for the first time at a restaurant in Sauble Beach when she was two.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6354 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_26fd-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Kids menu consultant\" width=\"738\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let me be clear though&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t believe in restricting nutrient-lacking food (like cheese poppers and hot dogs) &#8211; especially when they\u2019re within arms reach. Because food restriction can backfire in the long term and I don&#8217;t want my girls to sneak cookies from the cookie jar. Or feel bad about eating something that isn&#8217;t a superfood.<\/p>\n<p>Because there&#8217;s a time and place for beige foods and treats.\u00a0 And I even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2015\/10\/why-i-give-my-child-dessert-for-dinner\/\">include dessert with meals!<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>But for goodness sake, why do we have to collect all of those nutrient-deprived foods and call them the \u201cKIDS MENU\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Grilled cheese and fries can be on the menu, but don\u2019t stop there!\u00a0 Because it tells our kids that this is what they\u2019re supposed to eat. The other stuff is for grown-ups.<br class=\"\" \/><br class=\"\" \/>If we\u2019re at a party and they\u2019ve got hotdogs, then the kids can make that choice.<br class=\"\" \/><br class=\"\" \/><strong>I just don\u2019t want restaurants and other family destinations to make that choice for them.
