I&#8217;m going to share how we are doing Halloween this year if you need inspiration.<\/p>\n<p data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">Keep reading for my top tips for managing Halloween candy &#8211; especially during a pandemic!<\/p>\n<p data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">COVID aside, Halloween presents a few other challenges &#8211; especially for our little sugar-obsessed monsters (I mean kiddos).\u00a0 There&#8217;s a reason why children gush over all things sweet, sugar-y and carb-y.\u00a0 Heck I can name a few adults who enjoy a sweet thing or two.\u00a0 Am I right?\u00a0 Sugar is tasty!<\/p>\n<p data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">Plus these foods provide quick fuel without much effort (thanks to the glucose we get from those refined sugars). Don&#8217;t fall off your chair when I say this, but there is a place for sugar and sweets&#8230;and Halloween treats.<\/p>\n<p data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">In a world where we have easy access to sugar (and kids get exposure at school, playdates, etc) it&#8217;s really hard to avoid.\u00a0 Of course, I would be hands off if I lived on an island with no other humans.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s not reality (and it would be pretty lonely!).<\/p>\n<p data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">Deprivation can present challenges down the road if a child feels they have restricted access to certain foods (like sweets).\u00a0 That then backfires when they are no longer attached at our hip and have the freedom to make their own food choices.<\/p>\n<h3 data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">Setting up a healthy relationship with food starts now &#8211; being pulled out of school for months, no playdates or after school programs.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not taking Halloween from them too.\u00a0 Truthfully, all they want is costumes, candy, and connection.\u00a0 So that&#8217;s what they are going to get.<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">If the weather is decent, we&#8217;ll take them for a stroll down the street to check out all the decorations (our neighbourhood takes Halloween to the next level which is super fun).\u00a0 Then we will let them run around the park and search for treats (which I&#8217;m going to hide in a designated area so there&#8217;s no interference with other kids).<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">Easy peezy.\u00a0 Our family will get some physical activity, the kids get their candy and costumes, and the parents get to sit back and relax (hopefully with a warm cider in hand).<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">If the park is too packed, or the weather goes sour, we will take the scavenger hunt indoors.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">#2 &#8211; LET THEM GO TO TOWN\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Yup, I let the kids go nuts on their candy and eat as much as they like.\u00a0 It sounds like bad parenting, I know!\u00a0 But by the time they get indoors, take off their costumes, sort out their candy, then re-sort it five more times, \u200bthey don&#8217;t end up eating a ton.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><strong><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Before we started going &#8220;free-for-all&#8221; with candy, this was what happened&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Me: <em>You can ONLY have two pieces<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Kids: <em>Not fair.\u00a0 Please can I have one more (they would beg and beg)<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Mom: <em>Ok honey, you can have one more.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Kids:\u00a0 <em>Ugh. I&#8217;m still hungry. Can I have another one? Pleeeeeeease.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Mom:\u00a0 <em>No I&#8217;m sorry.\u00a0 That&#8217;s too much candy.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">Kids:\u00a0 <em>[Insert 10 minutes of tears and tantrums here].<\/em><\/li>\n<li data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">Mom:\u00a0 <em>Fine!\u00a0 But no more candy.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">\u200b\u200b\u200bIn the end, they ended up having a bunch of candy anyways!\u00a0 So now I just let them enjoy until it&#8217;s time for bedtime reading, without saying NO a million times. Out of sight out of mind &#8211; for adults and kids!\u00a0 I also ditch the candies I don&#8217;t love (i.e hard ones that are easy to choke on, tootsie rolls and caramel chews which are terrible for teeth). But given that there&#8217;s no trick or treating I don&#8217;t have to worry about that this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This week I found a pumpkin full of candy from last year in that same cupboard.\u00a0 Had it been within arms reach I can assure you it would be empty.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">#4 &#8211; OFFER CANDY WHEN NOT EXPECTED.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">I then give the girls one candy in their lunch box every day for the next week.\u00a0 or when they get home from school it serves as part of their after-school snack.\u00a0 <strong>Here&#8217;s the key.\u00a0 I offer it <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">before<\/span> they ask me.<\/strong>\u00a0 They realize they don&#8217;t need to beg, or sneak candy, because mommy is happily doling it out without their request.\u00a0 That takes the forbidden factor out of the treats.\u00a0 And then I might offer another piece with dinner periodically.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6876\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/qtq80-KzUNti-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/qtq80-KzUNti-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/qtq80-KzUNti-980x654.jpeg 980w, http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/qtq80-KzUNti-480x320.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">#5 &#8211; SHOW THEM HOW TO SAVOUR<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">Research shows that when<span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">\u00a0we take the time to taste our food<\/span>, we eat less.\u00a0 So I&#8217;m really trying to teach the girls mindfulness at meals, especially when eating &#8220;treats&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">\u200b\u200bI asked them to close their eyes and guess what colour gummy they were eating.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">\u200bI\u200b\u00a0asked what it tasted like, or reminded them of.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">\u200bI asked them how long they could keep it in their mouth before swallowing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">This way they weren&#8217;t ramming jube-jubes in their mouth without thought.\u00a0 \u200b\u200b<br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/>Alll this work is paying off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">Here&#8217;s what happens now when my girls are in the presence of sweets.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">They take the tiniest bites.\u00a0 They ration their stash so it lasts longer.\u00a0 And get this&#8230;.they will even take a bite out of a chocolate, wrap it back up and ask to save it for tomorrow.\u00a0 They are learning how to manage their intake already.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Remember this&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"8qoak-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">IT&#8217;S ONLY ONE NIGHT.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"8qoak-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">\u200b\u200bMy girls went to school with hard-boiled eggs, roasted cauliflower, sweet potatoes cucumber and hummus today. So that candy isn&#8217;t going to hurt them.\u00a0 And in the grand scheme of things, it&#8217;s just one day of indulgence.\u00a0 Or just a few days.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why I had to share my tips for managing Halloween candy.\u00a0 They are working and I know they will for you too.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"control-group\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"8qoak-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">WHAT ABOUT THE SWITCH WITCH?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"8qoak-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">\u200b\u200bI\u00a0was\u00a0loving the idea of the\u00a0Switch Witch\u00a0(who comes and steals your child&#8217;s candy), but\u00a0experts in the feeding space believe\u00a0the\u00a0Switch Witch implies control and pressure&#8230;because the goal is to decrease\/restrict candy intake. Ultimately it\u00a0doesn\u2019t help children learn\u00a0how to manage candy long-term.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7mop1-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">A &#8216;better&#8217; way is to\u00a0give your child the choice &#8211;\u00a0whether they would like to trade it\u00a0for\u00a0a trip to the movies, book, etc or keep the candy (although some experts would still frown upon this).<\/span><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7mop1-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7mop1-0-0\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6877 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/qtq80-dzdVMd-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" \/><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7mop1-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7mop1-0-0\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7b1kc-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">TEACHING THEM TODAY, FOR TOMORROW.<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7b1kc-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">\u200b\u200bIt&#8217;s beneficial to keep these &#8216;treats&#8217; around because it helps our kids learn how to behave around palatable foods, like Halloween\u00a0candy. They also see how their parents behave around these treats, and control their intake (ideally without guilt)\u00a0which influences their behaviour. Because a young adult who is\u00a0never\u00a0exposed to &#8220;palatable foods&#8221; (aka\u00a0Halloween\u00a0candy) will have a tough time eating them without shame\/guilt.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7mop1-0-0\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">FOOD SHOULDN&#8217;T HAVE POWER.<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">\u200bOur effort to\u00a0see\u00a0our kids\u00a0eat\u00a0less\u00a0candy can have the opposite effect (i.e. they try to get as much as possible when they get the chance, because it&#8217;s\u00a0restricted at home).\u00a0 Hence, forbidding or restricting Halloween treats can give them WAY\u00a0more power than they deserve.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">These perspectives gave me the push to change my approach with Halloween.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><strong>I&#8217;m not perfect, but I&#8217;m trying to set good habits now for my girls, so they can grow up with healthy mindset around all foods &#8211; be it kale or a Kit Kat bar.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\">I&#8217;d love to know what you think about these tips for managing Halloween candy.
