{"id":7878,"date":"2021-03-24T17:49:04","date_gmt":"2021-03-24T21:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/?p=7878"},"modified":"2021-03-24T22:12:28","modified_gmt":"2021-03-25T02:12:28","slug":"making-picky-eating-strategies-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2021\/03\/making-picky-eating-strategies-work\/","title":{"rendered":"How long should you stick with a picky eating strategy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a topic I&#8217;ve wanted to write about for ages &#8211; especially because parents just don&#8217;t know how long to use a picky eating strategy before giving up on it.<\/p>\n<p>So if you find yourself trying one mealtime trick for a few days or weeks, then moving to another tip you saw on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>If you feel unclear with what picky eating strategy to use first.<\/p>\n<p>If you aren&#8217;t sure how many strategies to try right now to help your picky eater.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>This post is for you my friend!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>A picky eating strategy that&#8217;s also a mistake.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>There&#8217;s a mealtime mistake I should share. Before I reveal what that mistake is, I need to tell you what happened this morning that prompted this post.\u00a0 Oddly it wasn&#8217;t at breakfast, or while feeding my kids, or while coaching another family.<\/p>\n<p>I was doing my daily work out &#8211; a high intensity 35 minute workout.\u00a0 And I was jumping, lunging, pushing, pulling, and moving like a maniac.\u00a0 But despite working so darn hard, that wasn&#8217;t when I felt like I was reaping the benefits of my workout.\u00a0 Sure I was moving fast and hard, but it wasn&#8217;t the thing that made me feel strong &#8211; or feel that my exercise was actually working.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-7894\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/qtq80-iDb4e2-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"picky eating a[[rpach\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/qtq80-iDb4e2-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/qtq80-iDb4e2-980x653.jpeg 980w, http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/qtq80-iDb4e2-480x320.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But then, I had to hold a plank for 60 seconds &#8211; and guys, THAT is when the sweat starting polling down my neck.\u00a0 THAT is when I started shaking like a leaf.\u00a0 THAT is when I felt my strongest and thought to myself: &#8220;<em>now this is working&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t when I was doing squats, <strong>but when I STAYED STILL in that squat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t when I was doing push ups, <strong>but when I STAYED STILL in that half push-up.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nor was it when I was doing bicep curls.\u00a0 <strong>But I felt it working when I HELD a half-way curl.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was at that moment, in my isometric movement (or lack of movement rather) that I started to reap the benefits of my workout this morning.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Isometric training<\/em> consists of the muscle contracting without changing length in a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">static position<\/span>. As a result, the athlete doesn\u2019t undergo a full range of movement in the \u2018lift\u2019. Some may think that this isn\u2019t an ideal way to build strength, but they couldn\u2019t be further from the truth. &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/boxlifemagazine.com\/the-benefits-of-isometric-training-a-few-drills-to-get-you-started\/\">source<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>It&#8217;s when we&#8217;re in the holding position that we reap the benefits:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Staying still <strong>builds strength<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Staying still <strong>helps controls the body<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Staying still <strong>improves flexibility\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7897 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_0316-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"picky eating strategy\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>But wait&#8230;what does exercise have to do with picky eating?<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>This isn&#8217;t a post about your fitness regimen.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>It&#8217;s about mealtimes &#8211; and feeding picky eaters.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I often see families constantly &#8216;moving&#8217; from one feeding or picky eating strategy to the next.\u00a0 Always looking for the next best tip or trick to adopt.\u00a0 Being resourceful isn&#8217;t a problem at all, nor is looking for support.\u00a0 I commend you for making the time to source out picky eating tips!<\/p>\n<p>Though, there&#8217;s something missing here (stillness).\u00a0 And there&#8217;s too much of something else (movement).<\/p>\n<p>Instead of squatting 20 times, try holding that squat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><a href=\"http:\/\/www.curiouscookiekids.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7909 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Curious-Cookie-FB-Ad.png\" alt=\"Curious Cookie\" width=\"850\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Curious-Cookie-FB-Ad.png 850w, http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Curious-Cookie-FB-Ad-480x198.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 850px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/h1>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>How long should you stick with a picky eating strategy?<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Instead of switching strategies when it doesn&#8217;t work right away&#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Try sticking with one picky eating strategy for a few weeks.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>May even need to continue with that strategy for a few months.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It all depends on how consistently you&#8217;re using the picky eating strategy &#8211; because kids need to learn what&#8217;s expected of them.\u00a0 If we waffle by doing one thing (i.e. say &#8220;<em>you don&#8217;t have to eat&#8221;<\/em>) but doing another (i.e. say &#8220;just have one bite&#8221;) we confuse kids.\u00a0 And that sends us back to square one.<\/p>\n<p>They only know what to do and how to respond appropriate, if they see that strategy held&#8230;and repeated over and over.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>How do you make a picky eating strategy more effective?<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Try one tip at a time and focus on it.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Be consistent, be still, be in the moment, and repeat it.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Why?\u00a0 Because everyone at the table needs time to adjust to that new mealtime strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Your picky eater needs time to realize what&#8217;s happening and recognize what&#8217;s expected of them at meals.\u00a0 You also need time to practice that feeding strategy. #practicemakesperfect<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Sticking with your picky eating strategy when you&#8217;re facing resistance is going to be tough (maybe your child isn&#8217;t responding well, and there are meltdowns, etc).\u00a0 That&#8217;s precisely how you&#8217;ll feel holding a squat for a minute (ouch!) &#8211; it&#8217;s going to burn, make you sweat, and you&#8217;ll desperately want to pop out of it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the real benefit comes from holding in that position &#8211; and in that new mealtime and picky eating approach &#8211; long enough that it starts to feels good.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong> It starts to feel easy.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>And the transformations you&#8217;ve been waiting for, start to roll in, making all that waiting (and sweat) worth it.
