It does a body good.<\/p>\n<p>But does it do as much &#8220;good&#8221; as we think?<\/p>\n<p>Giving our children milk after their first birthday is a nutrition protocol that many parents follow. And understandably so.\u00a0 Milk supplies the calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, protein, and other important nutrients that our growing children need.\u00a0 However, there&#8217;s some debate on whether our little ones need to drink milk at all, and whether the benefits of dairy outweigh the costs. For example, we believe milk equates to stronger bones, yet a large BMJ study<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g6015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> shows that high milk consumption is associated with increased mortality and hip fractures.<\/a>\u00a0 This topic (to drink or not to drink milk) warrants\u00a0a whole other post &#8211;\u00a0I&#8217;ll save that for another day.<u> <\/u><\/p>\n<p>The reason I bring this up is that some parents choose not to &#8216;follow the herd&#8217;, and opt not to use cow milk\u00a0as the primary source of nutrition for their kids.<\/p>\n<p>Our milk of choice for Sienna has been a homemade dairy-free formula (made with hemp milk). While our daughter has yet to drink cow&#8217;s milk per se, she had tried other varieties (both dairy and non-dairy) since weaning from breastmilk.<\/p>\n<p>When we are travelling or short on &#8216;formula&#8217;\u00a0ingredients,\u00a0a quality sheep or goat milk has filled the void.\u00a0 Last summer I also\u00a0sourced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biodynamic_agriculture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biodynamic <\/a>water buffalo milk from a local farmer. Buffalo milk surfaced while searching for the most nutrient and calorically dense option for our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2015\/07\/russell-silver-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">small and slow-growing daughter<\/a>.\u00a0 Because Sienna drank no more than a cup of milk per day, and she ate even less, that cup needed to be jam-packed with goodness.\u00a0\u00a0Buffalo milk contains all the nutrients found in cow milk but in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dairyforall.com\/milk-buffalo.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">higher proportions,<\/a> making it was a great beverage to alternate with her hemp formula (which is in her cup 80% of the time).<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Why hemp milk\u00a0vs. cow milk?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Sienna suffered from\u00a0constipation, reflux,\u00a0and other\u00a0digestive issues,\u00a0so I wanted to avoid taxing her system further by <strong>limiting potential irritants <\/strong>including\u00a0dairy\u00a0and wheat.\u00a0 Hemp is not a concern here.\u00a0 Also want to point out that\u00a0the smaller fat globules in goat and sheep milk make them\u00a0easier to digest vs. cow milk.<\/li>\n<li>Children are more likely to have an <strong>allergic reaction or intolerance<\/strong> to cow milk because it contains high amounts of the casein protein alpha S1.\u00a0\u00a0There are trace amounts of this protein in goat and sheep milk, hence a child can be allergic to cow milk while doing fine with goat\/sheep.\u00a0 Hemp seeds do not pose the same allergic threat that tree nuts or dairy do, and to date, there have been\u00a0no reported reactions to hemp.<\/li>\n<li>Calcium, found in all dairy products, <strong>competes with iron <\/strong>for absorption.\u00a0 This\u00a0is a particular concern for small children like Sienna who eat such limited quantities of iron sources\u00a0to begin with.\u00a0\u00a0Hemp milk on the other hand, is a moderate source of this essential mineral (plus I add molasses for an iron boost).<\/li>\n<li>When examining macronutrient ratios in cow milk,\u00a0hemp milk is very comparable (second next to soy).\u00a0\u00a0 It contains all\u00a0<strong>10 essential amino acids<\/strong>, making it one of the best sources of protein\u00a0for vegetarians (and picky eaters).\u00a0\u00a0Hemp is also a great source of fat (essential for our little one&#8217;s brain) and with the proper ratio of <strong>Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>While the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dairygoodness.ca\/good-health\/dairy-facts-fallacies\/hormones-for-cows-not-in-canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian government does not permit hormones <\/a>or antibiotics in cattle, I can&#8217;t be sure how the cattle are raised.\u00a0 So unless I know the source, I like to\u00a0play it safe.\u00a0\u00a0There is also\u00a0peace of mind for a mom knowing exactly what&#8217;s going into her child&#8217;s cup or bottle.\u00a0\u00a0With this hemp formula I don&#8217;t need to worry about preservatives, carrageenan or other <strong>unnecessary additives<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>That&#8217;s why I chose a homemade dairy-free formula\u00a0(made with hemp milk).\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>BUT (yes, there is a &#8216;but&#8217;) hemp milk is not perfect.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<div>In comparison to &#8216;real&#8217; milk, <strong>hemp lacks Vitamin D and\u00a0vitamin A<\/strong> as well as is an <strong>insufficient source of calcium<\/strong>. I solve for this by getting these nutrients from sources elsewhere.\u00a0 As you&#8217;ll see below, the formula contains drops (for Vitamin D), blackstrap molasses (for calcium, B vitamins, and iron), and a multi-vitamin to help round out the rest of the nutrient profile. BUT (yes, there&#8217;s another but) we still need to supplement further with REAL food &#8211; because the vitamins and minerals in food go much further than the ones we find in a bottle.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Homemade Hemp Milk (Dairy-Free) Formula<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<div>And finally, the recipe. Here is how we&#8217;ve made our little one&#8217;s formula for the past 18 months or so (and it&#8217;s worth noting that during this time her growth has surpassed expectations).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Hemp-Milk-Formula.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-846\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Hemp-Milk-Formula-847x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Hemp Milk Dairy-Free Formula\" width=\"530\" height=\"641\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Hemp-Milk-Formula-847x1024.jpg 847w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Hemp-Milk-Formula-248x300.jpg 248w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Hemp-Milk-Formula-300x362.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Hemp-Milk-Formula-610x737.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Hemp-Milk-Formula-1080x1305.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Hemp-Milk-Formula.jpg 1695w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<h3>\u00a0<strong>Ingredients<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>1\u00a0cup <strong>hemp seeds<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ManitobaHarvest.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manitoba Harvest<\/a>) &#8211; <span style=\"color: #008080;\">complete protein and essential fatty acids <\/span><\/li>\n<li>4\u00a0cups <strong>water<\/strong> (preferably filtered)<\/li>\n<li>1\/4 tsp.\u00a0to\u00a01 tsp. <strong>cod liver oil<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nordicnaturals.com\/en\/Products\/Product_Details\/514\/?ProdID=1541\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nordic Naturals<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carlsonlabs.com\/p-231-carlson-for-kids-cod-liver-oil-lemon-flavor.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carlson <\/a>or other <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westonaprice.org\/health-topics\/cod-liver-oil-basics-and-recommendations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommended sources available in your country) &#8211; <\/a><span style=\"color: #008080;\">essential fatty acids, Vitamin A and Vitamin D<\/span><\/li>\n<li>2 tsp. <strong>child&#8217;s multi-vitamin<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seroyal.ca\/pediatri-vite.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genestra Pediatri Vite)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>1-2 tbsp. <strong>flax oil<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.omeganutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Omega Nutrition<\/a>) &#8211; <span style=\"color: #008080;\">essential fatty acids<\/span><\/li>\n<li>2-4 tbsp. <strong>protein powder<\/strong>,\u00a0unsweetened (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunwarrior.com\/store\/proteins-natural-500g.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sun Warrior<\/a>) &#8211; <span style=\"color: #008080;\">complete protein <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Start with\u00a02\u00a0tablespoons and work your way up, reducing quantity\u00a0if child experiences any digestive discomfort, constipation, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>1 tbsp. <strong>blackstrap molasses<\/strong> &#8211;<span style=\"color: #008080;\"> iron, B\u00a0vitamins,\u00a0and calcium<\/span><\/li>\n<li>2\u00a0drops\u00a0<strong>Vitamin D<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ddropscompany.com\/ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">D Drops<\/a>) &#8211; <span style=\"color: #008080;\">Vitamin D (obviously<\/span><\/li>\n<li>2 scoop <strong>probiotics<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockwellnutrition.com\/p-genestra-hmf-baby-f-probiotic-66g-powder#.Vdcn-DZRFPZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genestra &#8211; HMF Baby F<\/a>) &#8211; <span style=\"color: #008080;\">beneficial bacteria<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Directions<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Mix all of the ingredients into a high speed blender.<\/li>\n<li>Store in a glass jar and\u00a0refrigerate for up to 48 hours.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><strong>A few notes:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>I&#8217;ve included the brands I use above, but feel free to source your own (note that\u00a0dosing will need to be\u00a0adjusted).<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;ve assumed that the\u00a04 cup batch will last <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">two days<\/span> so the recipe is designed to give a child the adequate amount of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">daily<\/span> nutrients.<\/li>\n<li>This formula was tweaked to meet my daughter&#8217;s needs based on age, weight and other factors (again, doses may need to be adjusted for your little one).<\/li>\n<li>TIP! You can get hemp seeds from Costco for a more reasonable price than you would find at your local grocer or health food store.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>How much &#8216;milk&#8217; do toddlers need?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Whichever &#8216;milk&#8217; you choose, most children over the age of 1 should have <strong>no more than 18 ounces (2 cups) of milk per day<\/strong>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s essential that they get their nutrients from a wider variety of foods (unless there are other complications).\u00a0 The more milk they drink, the less food they&#8217;ll want, and the less nutrients (especially iron and zinc) they will obtain.\u00a0 Having said that, if milk is your child&#8217;s primary source of nutrition, be cautious with how you make the transition so we don&#8217;t jeopardize their overall caloric\u00a0intake.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>What about the other non-dairy milks?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Hemp is not the only option if you decide to avoid dairy milk.\u00a0 There are a variety of dairy-free alternatives (also known as &#8216;alterna-milks&#8217;) including soy, rice, almond, hemp, flax, coconut, oat. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2017\/08\/6-non-dairy-milk-options-one-best\/\">I take a closer look at each of these in this post.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you aren&#8217;t sure your kids will want to even touch this healthy recipe, I cannot recommend the <a href=\"https:\/\/curiouscookiekids.com\/\">Curious Cookie Mat<\/a> enough, it is the ultimate meal exploration tool.
