Feeling behind on my to-do lists, and trying to manage the household stuff (bills, meals, chores) gets the best of me some days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many others feel the stress too. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/news\/press\/releases\/2021\/02\/adults-stress-pandemic#:~:text=The%20most%20common%20were%20feelings,elevated%20levels%20for%20many%20Americans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported higher levels of stress in America since the start of the pandemic. You might be surprised to know that 70% of North Americans are more stressed now than they&#8217;ve been in their entire career.\u00a0 \u00a0Stress and burnout are real issues affecting more and more people. With loss of business because of restrictions, unemployment, and virtual learning, it is no surprise that all of our stress levels were elevated.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can proudly state that I\u2019ve become way better at managing my stress. I\u2019m much more patient (and I think my kids would say more fun) too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s hard to avoid stressful moments like rushing to get food on the table and ensuring your children eat it, even a messy house wears you down. It is usually triggered by a situation or workload. Although it is normal, too much can have many adverse effects on your mental and physical health.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nasdonline.org\/1445\/d001245\/stress-management-for-the-health-of-it.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ninety percent of diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are caused by or worsened by bad stress. Some stress-related illnesses include high blood pressure, heart disease, ulcers, migraine headaches, and cardiovascular disease.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress also creates deficiencies in key nutrients: it prevents you from assimilating <strong>vitamin Bs<\/strong> (for energy), <strong>Vitamin C<\/strong> and <strong>zinc<\/strong> (for immunity), and <strong>magnesium<\/strong> (for healthy bones, sleep, stress, etc).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, people who suffer from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionauthority.com\/news\/simple-ways-to-combat-the-effects-of-stress\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more likely to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get sick (it suppresses your immune system)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crave sugar and carbs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have difficulty losing weight (especially around the middle)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suffer from cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get in a car accident<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Develop anxiety and depression\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is there are simple ways to manage your stress.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/sharon-mccutcheon-AjPHdF-UrL8-unsplash-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8386 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/sharon-mccutcheon-AjPHdF-UrL8-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Pink rocket candies. The spike won\u2019t usually give you the energy you crave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive sugar needs to be controlled by cortisol. Cortisol is a stress hormone located in the adrenal glands (on top of our kidneys) that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionauthority.com\/news\/simple-ways-to-combat-the-effects-of-stress\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increases blood sugar levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The primary function of cortisol is to regulate your stress and repair body tissues. When we eat too much sugar, our adrenal glands work harder to produce more cortisol. However, an overabundance of cortisol can create hormonal imbalances.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over a long period of time, chronic stress taxes our adrenals which leads to severe fatigue, brain fog, and cravings. thought of as a sugary treat, but dark chocolate contains many nutritional properties that stop stress in its tracks.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Savour a 2-ounce serving of 80% or higher, fair trade, dark chocolate or just raw cacao powder (but not before bedtime if you\u2019re sensitive to caffeine).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&#8217;s why:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chocolate contains anandamide, a neurotransmitter that temporarily blocks feelings of pain and depression.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chocolate and cocoa contain large amounts of flavanols, which enhance cognitive function and blood flow to your brain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies show a small amount of dark chocolate daily helps women keep unwanted weight off, and keep our moods happier!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark chocolate is a fabulous source of magnesium (which is known as the &#8220;calming mineral&#8221; or the &#8220;chill pill&#8221;).\u00a0 Since sugar and stress deplete magnesium, we need to increase our supply!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span
