You&#8217;re in the right place! That&#8217;s exactly why I wrote this post.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">As a Certified Nutritionist I know the ins and outs of what foods to avoid. Sugar is at the top of the list. And then there&#8217;s all the research pointing fingers at sugar for contributing to health concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><em>In 2017-18, <strong>4.8 million kids<\/strong> ages 10 to 17 had obesity, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childhealthdata.org\/learn-about-the-nsch\/NSCH\">National Survey of Children\u2019s Health<\/a>.<\/em><\/li>\n<li data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><em>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nhanes\/index.htm\"> National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey<\/a> found <strong>18.5% of kids<\/strong> ages 2 to 19 had obesity.<\/em><\/li>\n<li data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">The\u00a0<b>incidence of type 2 diabetes in youth<\/b> has increased dramatically over the past 20 years. In the U.S., estimates are as high as 5,000 new cases per year according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/care.diabetesjournals.org\/content\/39\/9\/1635\">ADA<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">The impact of sugar doesn&#8217;t stop there. It&#8217;s associated with other health concerns including behavourial issues among children. <span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">So naturally, my instinct was to keep any and all sugar out of the hands of my kids. <\/span><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">But having also studied how food\/feeding approaches affect children in the long term (i.e. eating disorders, emotional eating, and yes even obesity), I chose to handle treats a little differently the past few years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">So why are we flooding kids with candy on October 31st every year?<\/h3>\n<p data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">First of all, Halloween doesn\u2019t have to be ALL about the candies.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2021\/10\/10-healthier-halloween-treats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here are some healthier Halloween options\u00a0<\/a>I love.\u00a0 My girls don\u2019t get chocolate nor candy every day or every week.\u00a0 However, I believe there\u2019s a balance when it comes to what we feed our children. Don\u2019t fall off your chair when I say this, but <strong>there is a place for sugar and sweets<\/strong>\u2026and Halloween treats.<\/p>\n<p data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">In a world where we have easy access to sugar (and kids get exposure at school, playdates, etc) it\u2019s really hard to avoid.\u00a0 Of course, I would be hands off if I lived on an island with no other humans.\u00a0 But that\u2019s not reality (and it would be pretty lonely!). LET THEM GO TO TOWN.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Yup, I let the kids go nuts on their candy and eat as much as they like.\u00a0 It sounds like bad parenting, I know!\u00a0 But by the time they get indoors, take off their costumes, sort out their candy, then re-sort it five more times, \u200bthey don\u2019t end up eating a ton.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Before we started going \u201cfree-for-all\u201d with candy, this was what happened\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Me:\u00a0<em>You can ONLY have two pieces<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Kids:\u00a0<em>Not fair.\u00a0 Please can I have one more (they would beg and beg)<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Mom:\u00a0<em>Ok honey, you can have one more.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Kids:\u00a0\u00a0<em>Ugh. I\u2019m still hungry. Can I have another one? Pleeeeeeease.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Mom:\u00a0\u00a0<em>No I\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 That\u2019s too much candy.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">Kids:\u00a0\u00a0<em>[Insert 10 minutes of tears and tantrums here].<\/em><\/li>\n<li data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7j2js-0-0\">Mom:\u00a0\u00a0<em>Fine!\u00a0 But no more candy.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">\u200b\u200b\u200bIn the end, they ended up having a bunch of candy anyways!\u00a0 So now I just let them enjoy until it\u2019s time for bedtime reading, without saying NO a million times. Saves the drama, tears, and makes them less obsessed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">#2 &#8211; TAKE THEM TO FEWER HOUSES.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Although the pandemic seems to be coming to an end, it&#8217;s never a bad idea to limit the number of houses you visit. While part of the fun of Halloween night is knocking on your neighbours&#8217; doors, it&#8217;s always good to remember that you never know who is sick. However, aside from the concerns about catching anything, there is another good reason to take them to fewer houses.<\/p>\n<p>The fewer houses = the less candy! Your kids still get to enjoy the night and show off their costumes without making too many rounds.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">#3 &#8211; OUT OF SIGHT.\u00a0 OUT OF MIND.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Depending on how much they come home with, I\u2019ll pack some of it away in the cupboard. Out of sight out of mind \u2013 for adults and kids!\u00a0 I also ditch the candies I don\u2019t love (i.e hard ones that are easy to choke on, tootsie rolls and caramel chews which are terrible for teeth). After a week or so they tend to forget about the candy, so the rest goes to Keith&#8217;s office (or gets eaten in the car on his way there!). <span class=\"ac-designer-copy\" spellcheck=\"false\" data-offset-key=\"fbua4-1-0\">#Illneverknow<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">#4 &#8211; OFFER CANDY WHEN NOT EXPECTED.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I then give the girls one candy in their lunch box every day for the next week.\u00a0 or when they get home from school it serves as part of their after-school snack.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Here\u2019s the key.\u00a0 I offer it\u00a0before\u00a0they ask me.<\/strong>\u00a0 They realize they don\u2019t need to beg, or sneak candy, because mommy is happily doling it out without their request.\u00a0 That takes the forbidden factor out of the treats.\u00a0 And then I might offer another piece with dinner periodically.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">#5 &#8211; SHOW THEM HOW TO SAVOUR<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">Research shows that when<span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">\u00a0we take the time to taste our food<\/span>, we eat less.\u00a0 So I&#8217;m really trying to teach the girls mindfulness at meals, especially when eating &#8220;treats&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">\u200b\u200bI asked them to close their eyes and guess what colour gummy they were eating.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">\u200bI\u200b\u00a0asked what it tasted like, or reminded them of.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">\u200bI asked them how long they could keep it in their mouth before swallowing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">This way they weren&#8217;t ramming candy in their mouth without thought.\u00a0 \u200b\u200b<span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"> In fact, I would give them an opportunity to <strong>explore their favourite Halloween treat with their senses<\/strong>, which makes that candy last much much longer (meaning they will feel more satiated and likely eat LESS candy).\u00a0 One of the absolute best ways to do that is with the <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.CuriousCookieKids.com\">Curious Cookie\u2122 &#8220;Food Adventure&#8221; Mat<\/a>.<\/strong> \u00a0<\/em>It takes them on a food journey, and step-by-step they get to use their senses to look, feel, smell, listen and take little bites of the food they are exploring.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.curiouscookiekids.com\">Check it out here! <\/a><\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.curiouscookiekids.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-8526 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Curious-Cookie-Mat-chocolate-low-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"how to handle Halloween candy\" width=\"783\" height=\"587\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">It was amazing to see them ration their stash, and even take a bite out of chocolate and ask to save it for tomorrow.\u00a0 They are learning how to manage their intake already &#8211; because I had a way to manage Halloween candy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>BONUS TIP:<\/strong> REMOVE ASSOCIATION THAT HALLOWEEN = CANDY<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">One last tip for how to manage Halloween candy.\u00a0 I also try to teach my children that a Halloween treat doesn&#8217;t have to be sweet or sugar-laden.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why I tend to choose one of our favourite healthy snacks for Halloween. Good old <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seasnax.com\/\">SeaSnax.<\/a> \u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">I know&#8230;you think I&#8217;m silly for doling out sea vegetables for Halloween.\u00a0 However, g<\/span><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">iven that 95% of houses would likely be giving out chocolate or candy, there was room for something different.\u00a0 Plus, I would be happy if there were leftovers! (I love SeaSnax!)\u00a0 I was actually surprised to see and hear that children were pretty thrilled to see something different in their pumpkins and pillowcases.\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">I actually heard one little boy yell &#8220;<em>Mommy look!\u00a0 It&#8217;s SeaSnax!<\/em>&#8221; as he walked away from the house. Phew!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5127\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0620-e1541129487474-969x1024.jpg\" alt=\"how to manage Halloween candy\" width=\"694\" height=\"733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0620-e1541129487474-969x1024.jpg 969w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0620-e1541129487474-284x300.jpg 284w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0620-e1541129487474-768x812.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0620-e1541129487474-300x317.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0620-e1541129487474-610x645.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0620-e1541129487474-1080x1141.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_0620-e1541129487474.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 694px) 100vw, 694px\" \/><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/>\u200b\u200b<br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">\u200bOk back to my tricks&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">\u200bIn case it wasn&#8217;t clear why\u00a0I changed my tune with the treats,\u00a0here are a few reasons:<\/span><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"8qoak-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">IT&#8217;S ONLY ONE NIGHT.\u00a0\u00a0OR\u00a0ONE WEEK.<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"8qoak-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">\u200b\u200bMy girls went to school\u00a0with salmon, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, flax crackers, baba ganoush (eggplant dip), blackberries, and tomatoes today.\u00a0 Their other lunches (and dinners) look pretty close to this.\u00a0 It took a lot of work and many of the strategies I share in\u00a0<a class=\"ac-designer-copy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/webinar\" data-ac-default-color=\"1\">my Free Webinar<\/a>\u00a0to get them to a place where they eat nutrient-dense meals 80-90% of the time.\u00a0 This way I\u00a0don&#8217;t have to bite my tongue\u00a0watching them\u00a0suck on lollipops.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7mop1-0-0\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"8qoak-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">SWITCH WITCH IS STILL A FORM OF PRESSURE.<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"8qoak-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">Since we are talking about how to handle Halloween candy, I should address the Switch Witch approach. <em>\u00a0<\/em>\u200b\u200bI was loving the idea of the Switch Witch (who comes and steals your child&#8217;s candy), but experts in the feeding space believe the Switch Witch implies control and pressure&#8230;because the goal is to decrease\/restrict candy intake. Ultimately it doesn\u2019t help children learn how to manage Halloween candy long-term.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">While I personally am supportive of &#8220;Switch Witch&#8221; for a portion of their candy, a &#8216;better&#8217; way is to give your child the choice &#8211; whether they would like to trade it for a trip to the movies, book, etc or keep the candy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7mop1-0-0\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7b1kc-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">TEACHING THEM TODAY, FOR TOMORROW.<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7b1kc-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\">\u200b\u200bIt&#8217;s beneficial to keep these &#8216;treats&#8217; around because it helps our kids learn how to behave around palatable foods, like Halloween candy. They also see how their parents behave around these treats, and control their intake (ideally without guilt) which influences their behaviour. Because a young adult who is never exposed to &#8220;palatable foods&#8221; (aka Halloween candy) will have a tough time eating them without shame\/guilt.\u00a0 That&#8217;s where the <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.CuriousCookieKids.com\">Curious Cookie\u2122 &#8220;Food Adventure&#8221; Mat <\/a><\/strong><\/em>works so beautifully as well.\u00a0 Because we are teaching kids to learn about all foods and explore them.\u00a0 Every new food they add to their preferred food list with the <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.CuriousCookieKids.com\">Curious Cookie\u2122 &#8220;Food Adventure&#8221; Mat <\/a><\/strong><\/em>is a food you can build from.\u00a0 Even if it&#8217;s a new treat.\u00a0 Each foods lends a different texture, smell, appearance, and even requires different oral motor skills.\u00a0 So the more foods your child has the easier it is to expand their food list.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s exactly what the Curious Cookie Mat was designed to do!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7b1kc-0-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.curiouscookiekids.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7839 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Bitmap@2x-1-1024x684.png\" alt=\"Sensory food activities for kids\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"7mop1-0-0\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">FOOD SHOULDN&#8217;T HAVE POWER.<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">\u200bOur effort to see our kids eat less candy can have the opposite effect (i.e. they try to get as much as possible when they get the chance because it&#8217;s restricted at home).\u00a0 Hence, forbidding or restricting Halloween treats can give them WAY more power than they deserve.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\"><strong>These perspectives gave me the push to change my approach to Halloween.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not perfect, but I&#8217;m trying to set good habits now for my girls, so they can grow up with a healthy mindset about all foods &#8211; be it kale or a Kit Kat bar.\u00a0<\/strong><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/><br class=\"ac-designer-copy\" \/>I realize I&#8217;m sharing extremes here, yet treats are likely not 100% forbidden in your \u200b\u200bhome.\u00a0 So take any of these tips for how to manage <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2021\/10\/10-healthier-halloween-treats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Halloween candy<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>and apply what works for you and your family.<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ac-designer-copy\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"3tdpd\" data-offset-key=\"1gps7-0-0\">And finally, my highlight from Halloween wasn&#8217;t the candy or these 5 tricks.\u00a0 This is one of my absolute favourite costumes that I&#8217;ve had the pleasure of seeing my girls wear.\u00a0 A few years ago, Sienna was beyond excited to dress up as her idol &#8211; Terry Fox.
