{"id":861,"date":"2017-08-01T02:41:32","date_gmt":"2017-08-01T02:41:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/?p=861"},"modified":"2017-08-03T15:29:00","modified_gmt":"2017-08-03T15:29:00","slug":"6-dairy-free-milk-alternatives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2017\/08\/6-dairy-free-milk-alternatives\/","title":{"rendered":"6 Dairy-Free Milk Alternatives: which one is best?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m sorry but dairy is damn delicious. \u00a0Every time I am pregnant (currently 7 months pregnant with Baby Binns #3), I crave dairy like it&#8217;s nobody&#8217;s business. \u00a0For someone who NEVER drinks cow&#8217;s milk, RARELY eats dairy-based yogurts (just sheep and kefir), and SOMETIMES samples cheese and sips wine with my Italian family (oh and the odd ice cream too), I am a changed person when there&#8217;s a babe in this belly.<\/p>\n<p>I <em>could<\/em> eat high-fat, creamy dairy all day long. \u00a0I <em>could<\/em> but I <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> for a number of reasons which we will save for another post.<\/p>\n<p>So instead I trick myself, and this dairy-loving baby, with dairy-free milk alternatives.\u00a0 Thankfully there are a few to go around! \u00a0However, I&#8217;m a little weary about using the canned variety due to the use of<strong> BPA in the lining<\/strong> of most canned products. \u00a0With a high-fat product like coconut milk, the fat leaches toxins into the milk and no one wants that!<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re better off using a brand like <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2uZIB11\">Aroy-D <\/a>which uses as a BPA-free lining free of\u00a0<strong>Titanium Dioxide<\/strong>\u00a0(used as a replacement for BPA-free liners which comes with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleansthenewblack.com\/health\/bpa-free-coconut-milk-not-healthy\">list of negative news<\/a>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Titanium Dioxide is <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12002786\">linked<\/a> to Crohn&#8217;s\u00a0Disease.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It has been shown to cause <strong>inflammation in the small intestine\u2026hello <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleansthenewblack.com\/health\/leaky-gut-decoded\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leaky gut<\/a><\/strong>!. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3442211\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">source<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Titanium dioxide is classified as \u201cpossibly <strong>carcinogenic<\/strong>\u201d to humans, (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccohs.ca\/headlines\/text186.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">source<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Titanium Dioxide was approved for food use in 1969 based on weak evidence. Current research shows it <strong>accumulates in organs and cause physiological changes<\/strong>, (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25091211\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">source<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Coconut milk in the carton is not a great option either because it is watered down, diluting the nutrients per serving. \u00a0The best alternative is to make your own with a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenourishinggourmet.com\/2011\/09\/coconut-milk-from-coconut-flakes.html\"> homemade coconut milk recipe like this.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3589 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/rice-2294365_640.jpg\" alt=\"Dairy-Free Milk Alternatives\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/rice-2294365_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/rice-2294365_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/rice-2294365_640-610x406.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">Rice Milk<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Rice milk has become as ubiquitous as almond milk these days. \u00a0It&#8217;s inexpensive, dairy-free and has a decent taste. \u00a0Some choose to make a similar non-dairy drink with <strong>rice milk<\/strong> which I recommend avoiding for two main reasons.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Rice contains <strong>arsenic<\/strong>.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/ForConsumers\/ConsumerUpdates\/ucm352569.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The FDA is currently studying the health effects <\/a>from consuming rice products over the long-term.<\/li>\n<li>Rice is heavy on\u00a0<strong>carbohydrates<\/strong> with too <strong>little fat and protein<\/strong> for us. \u00a0While adults can supplement our diet with these missing macronutrients, our little ones (especially the picky eaters in our home) are limited in their options. \u00a0So choosing a quality milk source becomes more important.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3591 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/oats-701299_640.jpg\" alt=\"Dairy-Free Milk Alternatives\" width=\"640\" height=\"468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/oats-701299_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/oats-701299_640-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/oats-701299_640-610x446.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">Oat Milk<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There&#8217;s also an option to make milk from various grains, with <strong>oat milk<\/strong> being the most common.\u00a0 The benefit of oat milk is the <strong>fiber<\/strong> it contains and that it&#8217;s more <strong>calorically dense<\/strong> than other milks; however oats offer\u00a0<strong>very little fat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3582\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Dairy-free-milk-options-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Dairy-Free Milk Alternatives\" width=\"548\" height=\"548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Dairy-free-milk-options-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Dairy-free-milk-options-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Dairy-free-milk-options-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Dairy-free-milk-options-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Dairy-free-milk-options-610x610.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Dairy-free-milk-options-1080x1080.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Dairy-free-milk-options.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 548px) 100vw, 548px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">Almond Milk<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Almond milk<\/strong> is another popular choice for parents, but with the nut allergy epidemic and nut ban in some schools, it can be limiting.\u00a0 Nutritionally, almond milk <strong>lacks the fat<\/strong> that our little ones require (the brain made up of 60% fat and are growing at rapid rates in the early years).\u00a0 Also, nut milks in general\u00a0have <strong>insufficient protein<\/strong> and are <strong>deficient in Vitamin D\/B12<\/strong>.\u00a0 While some brands fortify their packaged milk with vitamins\/minerals they may not be the best or most absorbable versions.\u00a0 Making your own almond milk and supplementing\u00a0with Vitamin D, etc yourself\u00a0is a better option.<\/p>\n<p>Also from an environmental perspective, almonds <strong>require a ton of water<\/strong>\u00a0which is a dwindling resource (and a sacred one for those in California).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>California\u2019s drought-stricken Central Valley churns out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almonds.com\/sites\/default\/wp-content\/uploads\/content\/attachments\/2013_almanac.pdf\">80 percent of the globe\u2019s almonds<\/a>, and since each nut takes a gallon of water to produce, they account for close to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/technology\/future_tense\/2014\/05\/_10_percent_of_california_s_water_goes_to_almond_farming.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10 percent<\/a> of the state\u2019s annual agricultural water use\u2014or more than what the entire population of Los Angeles and San Francisco use in a year. &#8211; Sesame seeds contain several nutrients such as <strong>calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc.<\/strong>\u00a0 Sesame seeds contain 88 mg of calcium in just one tablespoon (the DRI for adults is 1000 mg of calcium and toddlers need 700 mg). \u00a0Hence they are one of the richest seed sources of calcium.<\/p>\n<p>Even though sesame seeds have all these amazing minerals, they also contain <strong>anti-nutrients<\/strong> (oxalic acid) that bind and block the minerals from getting absorbed sufficiently. &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/draxe.com\/sesame-seeds\/\">Source<\/a>\u00a0 While we want to ensure our little ones are absorbing all the benefits of they are taking in, we face this challenge with many foods. \u00a0So the best thing to do is include variety and switch things up.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve yet to see a packaged brand of sesame milk, but you can easily make your own (soaking to help release those anti-nutrients and improve absorption). \u00a0Try this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youngandraw.com\/boost-your-calcium-with-homemade-sesame-seed-milk\/\">sesame milk recipe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0cb1a1;\">BONUS: Hemp Milk<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>How could I forget about my trusty hemp milk. \u00a0It was the primary source of liquid nutrition for my eldest daughter. \u00a0Especially during the days of her extreme picky eating, and when she preferred to drink her meals. \u00a0Thankfully she loved my nutrient-dense\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2015\/08\/homemade-dairy-free-formula\/\">hemp milk formula<\/a>. \u00a0And I felt better about the fact that this &#8220;milk&#8221; was a primary source of nutrition.<\/p>\n<p>What do I have a deeper love for hemp milk? \u00a0Well, it contains all\u00a0<strong>10 essential amino acids<\/strong>, making it one of the best sources of protein\u00a0for vegetarians (and picky eaters).\u00a0\u00a0Hemp is also a great source of fat (essential for our brain, skin, hair, nails, etc) with the proper ratio of <strong>Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids<\/strong>. \u00a0You can read more about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2015\/08\/homemade-dairy-free-formula\/\">why I prefer hemp milk in this post.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s worth noting that hemp milk comes with its cons as well. Specially that it is lacking in nutrients like<strong>\u00a0Vitamin D, A and calcium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As we can see, no &#8216;milk&#8217; is an ideal option. \u00a0Yet all can be rounded out by adding the missing nutrients, preferably through food and quality supplementation. \u00a0It comes down to weighing the benefits of consuming dairy (getting Vitamin A, D, B12) with the downsides of dairy (blocking iron absorption, intolerances, increased acidity, inflammation, etc). \u00a0The good news is that we have dairy-free milk options that are really good!<\/p>\n<p>Try them in your
