no car loading or gas required.\u00a0\u00a0 We have the luxury of living pretty darn close to some fantastic\u00a0local stores here\u00a0in Toronto.\u00a0\u00a0 That&#8217;s where I\u00a0do 80% of\u00a0my grocery shopping and spend our hard earned dollars.<\/p>\n<p>As for the other 20%&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>When my husband and I\u00a0need a\u00a0kid-free date,\u00a0we\u00a0leave the little ones with\u00a0the grandparents\u00a0and venture to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.costco.ca\" target=\"_blank\">Costco.<\/a>\u00a0 Sad but true.\u00a0\u00a0 There&#8217;s something about that place that\u00a0I secretly love.\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;s knowing that I will walk away with a fabulous deal or it&#8217;s the anticipation of what new\u00a0goodies I&#8217;ll\u00a0find.\u00a0\u00a0 We do the &#8216;Costco date&#8217; once every few months with the intention of replenishing some staples,\u00a0but end up buying\u00a0much more\u00a0100% of the time.<\/p>\n<p>I recently did a Periscope on my favourite healthy purchases from what is now the 2nd largest retailer in the world, Costco (a wholesale membership-only warehouse club).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v10H3Zm64OU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t have 9 minutes to listen to me ramble about my shopping list, I&#8217;ve summarized it all below.<\/p>\n<p><b>Cashews<\/b> <strong>($14 for 1 kg)<\/strong> &#8211; I don&#8217;t eat them regularly but I&#8217;m on a raw cheesecake kick.\u00a0\u00a0 We made these <a href=\"http:\/\/minimalistbaker.com\/7-ingredient-vegan-key-lime-pies\/#_a5y_p=1399725\" target=\"_blank\">key lime cheesecakes bite<\/a> by blending\u00a0soaked cashews\u00a0with lime and a bit of maple syrup.\u00a0 De-LISH!\u00a0 If you&#8217;re little one isn&#8217;t gaining enough weight or taking in enough calories, cashews are a go to.\u00a0 My 2 year old ate half of\u00a0my cheesecake with no hesitation.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s creamy, not too sweet, and a good source of proteins and fatty acids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Walnuts ($23 for 1.36 kg ),\u00a0<\/strong><b>Spinach ($4 for 11 oz) <\/b>&amp; <strong>R<\/strong><b>oasted Tomatoe<\/b><strong>s ($10 for 800 mls)<\/strong> &#8211; I&#8217;m also loving pesto lately as an alternative to your standard tomato sauce on pasta, or vinaigrette on salads and roasted veggies.\u00a0\u00a0 This is one of my favourite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joyoushealth.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/31\/pasta-with-arugula-sundried-tomato-hemp-pesto\/\" target=\"_blank\">dairy-free pesto recipes <\/a>which I picked up from Joyous Health.\u00a0 I substitute spinach if I&#8217;m low on arugula and use the roasted tomatoes from Costco.\u00a0 By the way, I buy all of my greens organic.\u00a0 According to EWG site they are part of the dirty dozen with a fair amount of pesticides.\u00a0 The roasted tomatoes are incredible &#8211; on their own, tossed in a salad.\u00a0\u00a0 Half the jar is already gone.<\/p>\n<p><b>Zucchini ($5 for 8)- <\/b>If your kids are like most, they are pasta obsessed.\u00a0\u00a0Try switching out the traditional nutrient-deficient wheat pasta\u00a0with zucchini noodles.\u00a0\u00a0 You can use a mandoline or a\u00a0spiralizer if you have either kitchen tool on hand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avocado ($7 for 5)<\/strong> &#8211; This was Sienna&#8217;s first food and continues to play a primary role on her plate as a nutrient dense food.\u00a0\u00a0 At $2 a pop the cost adds up, especially\u00a0when we eat an avocado every day.\u00a0 So I&#8217;m happy to save a few dollars and grab a bag at Costco for about half the price.\u00a0 Oh and by the way, there&#8217;s no need to buy organic avocados given that they are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the<\/span> cleanest food (with the lowest amount of pesticides).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chia Seeds ($10 for 2lbs)<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; These tiny seeds are loaded with goodness.\u00a0\u00a0 Believe it or not they are a decent source of iron (one ounce has 3.5 grams which is more than lentils and spinach) as well as fiber (one ounce has 11 grams of fiber, more than the daily requirement for a toddler.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll get a good size bag at Costco so you can make your chia puddings, sprinkle on yougurt, mix into your baking (as an egg substitute or in your smoothies.<\/p>\n<p><b>Coconut oil (n\/a) and Avocado <\/b><strong>oils ($14) &#8211; <\/strong>The main reason I get in my car and drive to Costco with two crying kids in the back is to replenish my oils.\u00a0\u00a0 Both coconut and avocado oils are great for cooking at high temperatures (smoke points at\u00a0350 and\u00a0480 degrees F respectively).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coconut Flour (2 kg for n\/a)<\/strong> &#8211; I bought both the coconut oil\u00a0and coconut flour on a separate trip so don&#8217;t have the price on hand.\u00a0 BUT I can promise you that I did save some money.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re avoiding grains or on the paleo diet kick, coconut flour is a safe alternative to wheat.\u00a0 You can find some delicious recipes for pancakes, cakes, muffins, pizza crust, etc made with this healthier flour (high in fiber and a good source of protein).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hemp Seeds ($13 for 800 gms)<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; We go through a lot of hemp seeds in this household, primarily because it&#8217;s the source of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniellebinns.com\/stagingsite\/2015\/08\/homemade-dairy-free-formula\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sienna&#8217;s homemade formula or milk<\/a>.\u00a0 I currently have 5 bags in my cupboard.\u00a0 If you aren&#8217;t making homemade hemp milk (which is simply made by blending a 1:4 ratio of seeds to water with some vanilla and maple syrup if you wish), then top off your salads, yogurt, oats with these nutrient packed seeds.\u00a0\u00a0Similar to chia seeds, they are a decent source of iron, protein, and especially those important fatty acids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bark Thins<\/strong> <strong>($11.50)<\/strong> &#8211; I can&#8217;t go to Costco and not pick up\u00a0some type of a &#8216;treat&#8217;.\u00a0 This is one I don&#8217;t have to feel that bad about snacking on because it&#8217;s made with fair trade dark chocolate and simple ingredients.
